- 2. Background • The Indian medicine system development are Ayurveda and Siddha system . Dhanvantari was considered as "the Hindu god of medicine". • The celebrated authorities in Ayurvedic medicine were Atreya, charaka, Susruta and Vaghbhatt. • Atreya(800)- is the first Indian physician and teacher lived in ancient university of Takshashila. • Charaka(200A.D)- compiled his famous treatise on medicine the "Charaka samhita"
- 3. • Susruta( father of surgery)- compiled the surgical knowledge of his classic "susruta samhita". • Ayurveda is a "Tridosha theory of disease" The doshas are: vata(wind), pitta( gall) and kalpa( mucus). • Historical records show that efficient hospitals were constructed in India by 600 BC . • During the splendid reign of King Asoka (273-232 BC), Indian hospitals started to look like modern hospitals. They followed principles of sanitation and cesarean sections were performed with close attention to technique in order to save both mother and child.
- 4. • Physicians were appointed –one for every ten villages-to serve the health care needs of the populations and regional hospitals for the infirm and destitute were built by Buddha. • The Indian medicine begins to decline from the Mohammedan invasions in the tenth century. • During Akbar’s period the Unani medicine system spread all the way through the greater part of India.
- 5. • During his period, there were a good number of government hospitals, as well as private clinics run by many physicians. • The modern system of medicine in India was introduced in the 17th centaury with the arrival of Christian missionaries in South India. • In the 17th centaury, British empire established first hospital at Chennai in 1664.
- 6. • Till the 1840s Ayurveda and Unani were the only common medical practices in India. • In 1846 when the Fourth Nizam Nasir-ud- Daulah fell ill, no Unani or Ayurveda practitioner was able to cure him. • Then British Residency Surgeon Dr. William Campbell Mclean used the allopathic treatment on the ill Nizam and cure it. - 7. • Impressed by his abilities and the medical treatment the Nizam asked Dr. William to teach allopathy to his people. • This gave birth to Hyderabad Medical School now known as Osmania Medical College. • Osmania Medical College also has a rich history of scientific advances, and its long- established legacy is marked by landmark achievements, such as the Chloroform Commissions of Hyderabad in 1888 and 1889.
- 8. • The protection of chloroform use in humans was firmly established. • Chloroform was first used as an anesthetic at Osmania Hospital in the world. • It is also the first medical university in South India to offer an endocrinology postgraduate course.

Niloufer Hospital • Niloufer Hospital is housed in a building in the heart of historic Hyderabad and has an interesting past. • This reputed institution was founded in 1949 by the Princess Niloufer. • Princess Niloufer was the daughter of king of Ottoman Empire (Turkey) and was married to prince Moazzam Jah- son of 7th Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan - (the last Asaf Jahi ruler) of Hyderabad Deccan in 1931. • Just like Florence nightingale, the princess had a liking to serve the poor and also took to serving the poor as a nurse.
- 11. • In 1949, one of the princess' maids died during childbirth due to lack of medical facilities. • On hearing this news, the princess was very shattered. • She then decided to ensure that no mother faces death hereafter. • Princess Niloufer made known to her father-in- law the problems arising due to this lack of medical facilities. • In 1953, what began as a 100-bed hospital to meet the health requirements of the mother & child, was destined to progress with no looking back.

The Institute of Mental Health, Erragadda • The Institute of Mental Health, Erragadda also known as Erragadda Mental Hospital is one of the oldest health institutions established by the Nizams reign in Hyderabad State. • It is run by Government of Telangana, located in Erragadda, Hyderabad. • It serves the mental health patients from all over the state.
- 14. • Established as Darul-Majanine meaning Mental Asylum, the hospital was started at Chanchalguda Central Jail and shifted to Jalna (Maharashtra) with 400 beds. • The institute was moved to Jalna (part of Nizam dominion at the time) during 1895–1907. • The name of the institution changed from Darul- Majanine to Hospital for Mental Diseases, Jalna. • The institute was shifted from Jalna To Hyderabad in 1953 after Hyderabad State (1948–56) was formed and Jalna was merged with Maharashtra.

Gandhi Medical College • About 150 yrs ago, in 1851, Gandhi hospital was stared initially as an Infirmary of 3 wards, developed into a Cantonment Hospital with 95 beds in 1900. • It has progressed to King Edward Memorial Hospital in 1913 and has grown into a teaching hospital in 1958 for Gandhi Medical College with present bed strength of 1200.
- 17. • The GMH is a 1,200-bed facility and each year performs about 80,000 outpatient consultations, 42,000 inpatient admissions, 15,000 minor operations, and 11,000 major operations. • Gandhi hospital has distinction of being the first open heart surgery centre of the combined state of Andhra Pradesh and the first to have Cath lab facilities for training of DM cardiology students. Gandhi Medical College was established in 1954 and was recognized by MCI in 1956.

Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences • Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is a public hospital located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India and is named after its founder – the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad– and was inaugurated by Princess Durreshehvar. • It is an Institute under State Legislature Act under the Act of Andhra Pradesh State Legislature. It has a big sprawling campus in Punjagutta • The hospital was under the H.E.H. the Nizam's Charitable Trust until it was handed over to AP Government.

Erragadda Chest Hospital • TB and Chest Hospital also known as Erragadda Chest Hospital is a tuberculosis hospital located in Hyderabad, India. • The 670-bed hospital is located on 65 acres near Erragadda. • The Irranuma Palace, now the government Chest Hospital, was built during the time of the sixth Nizam by a noble, Nizamuddin Fakhrul Mulk in 1888 and abandoned it because of a superstition. • The palace was donated to be converted into a hospital by the VII Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan. • Erramanzil belonged to the same family. Their tombs, Fakhrul Mulk, still exists at SR Nagar agadda
