—Steve Jobs
“Management is about
persuading people to do
things they do not want to
do, while leadership is
about inspiring people to
do things they never
thought they could.”
Who is Steve
Jobs?
01
A short background
STEVE JOBS
● He was an American entrepreneur, designer, and
inventor best known for co-founding Apple Inc.
● Born in San Francisco and adopted as a child, Jobs
developed a passion for technology early on.
● He attended Reed College but dropped out after
one semester to focus on his interests. In 1976, he
co-founded Apple with Steve Wozniak,
revolutionizing the personal computer industry
with products like the Apple II and Macintosh.
● Despite being ousted from Apple in 1985, Jobs
founded NeXT and Pixar Animation Studios. He
returned to Apple in 1997 and revitalized the
company, leading to the creation of
groundbreaking products like the iPod, iPhone, and
iPad.
What is transformational Leadership and
its key characteristics?
It is a style of leadership that inspires and motivates followers to go beyond their
self-interest and strive for higher levels of achievement. It is characterized by the
leader's ability to:
•Create a shared vision: Inspire followers to work towards a common goal.
•Intellectual stimulation: Encourage followers to think critically and creatively.
•Individualized consideration: Attend to the needs and development of individual
followers.
•Inspirational motivation: Communicate a compelling vision and inspire followers to
believe in it.
02
Steve Jobs- CREATE A SHARED
VISIONS
Steve Jobs was renowned for his ability to
create a shared vision that inspired and
motivated his teams at Apple.
Example of that is when Steve Jobs introduced
the iPod, he didn't just present it as a digital
music player. He painted a picture of a world
where music could be carried in your pocket
and accessed instantly.
Steve Jobs- INTELLECTUAL
STIMULATION
Steve Jobs was a master at intellectual stimulation, fostering a culture
of innovation and critical thinking within Apple. Here's how he
implemented this aspect of transformational leadership:
1. Challenging the Status Quo: He encouraged
employees to challenge conventional wisdom and
explore unconventional solutions.
2. Encouraging Creativity: He often encouraged his teams
to brainstorm ideas without fear of judgment or failure.
3. Promoting Continuous Learning: He encouraged his
employees to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and
technologies, and he often brought in experts to share their
knowledge.
4. Seeking Diverse Perspectives: He encouraged open
dialogue and debate, recognizing that diverse
perspectives could lead to innovative solutions.
5. Setting High Standards: He pushed his employees to strive for excellence and to never settle for
mediocrity.
Steve Jobs- INDIVIDUALIZED
CONSIDERATION
Steve Jobs was known for his demanding and often abrasive leadership
style, but he also demonstrated a deep commitment to his employees'
personal and professional development. Here's how he implemented
individualized consideration:
1. Mentorship and Guidance
2. Recognizing Potential
3. Challenging Employees
4. Creating a Culture of Excellence
5. Celebrating Success
Steve Jobs- INSPIRATIONAL
MOTIVATION
Steve Jobs’ has been an inspiration and source of motivation for his team. He has become a
pillar that brings light to his team to do better and to dare trying things they thought they
couldn’t do. Here’s how he inspire his team:
1. Clear Vision: Articulated a compelling future for
Apple.
2. Passion: Infused enthusiasm into his team.
3. High Standards: Demanded excellence from
employees.
4. Recognition: Rewarded achievements to boost
morale.
5. Purpose: Created a sense of meaning in their work.
● Steve Jobs is an example of a
great transformational leader.
● To inspire and to motivate are
what being a transformational
leader really is.
● A transformational leader should
have shared vision, intellectual
stimulation, individualized
consideration, and inspirational
motivation.
A SUMMARY IS
GOOD!
03
Lets answer the
questions from
the past case
study.
04
Why do you think so much attention has been
placed on Steve Jobs as an individual over Apple as
a collective?
Do you agree/disagree with these
attribution of single-handedly “saving” Apple, or
personally “dinging” up the universe?
First Question
First of all, without Steve Jobs, Apple wouldn’t exists.
Steve Jobs is one of the transformational leader who touches
the lives of individuals and motivates them to surpass their
limits. Additionally, Steve Jobs himself considered as
charismatic and influential leader on individuals. His study of
being a dreamer to being a winner is much more relatable.
We beg to disagree, although Steve Jobs has been
proven as strong and charismatic leader. It is very impossible
to save big company on just one person especially Apple as an
international company. We are pretty sure that there are lot of
people behind that saving which is not as influential as Steve
Jobs. It is a collective effort of him and of the people he
influences that dings the universe and give everlasting
impression.
ANSWER
What did Steve Jobs transform?
How was it transformed?
Second Question
In general, he “led a cultural transformation the way
music, movies, and mobile communications were experience in
the digital age”. Just like how Apple products become an
indispensable part of our lives. But to be more specific, Jobs
influences the people around him to perform and to do things
they thought they couldn’t do. Just like how he influences his
subordinates to perform beyond their limits
ANSWER
How and why did people think Steve Jobs was
charismatic?
Third Question
People has been greatly influenced by what
they see and read based on the internet about how
charismatic Steve Jobs really is. He has been
described as an individuals of influence by
generations that greatly contribute to him being a
charismatic individual. Lastly, the success also play a
factor.
ANSWER
What parallel can you see in this case study
between Steve Jobs and religious leaders?
What do you make of those?
How might be this be helpful?
How might it be harmful?
Fourth Question
Steve Jobs, according to the reports, is a follower
of Zen Buddhism. Just like how religious leader follows
and believe their individual religions. One of the
common characteristics between Jobs and the
religious leaders is their charismatic characters that
influences the lives of their followers. This
characteristic helps motivate and inspire individuals to
live out of their shell and goes beyond their limit. On
the other hand, its also harmful if it is used to
manipulate others into doing harmful things as what
reporters allegedly label Steve Jobs
ANSWER
Where can you see redemption in this case study?
Fifth Question
Although Steve Jobs has been given a lot of
negative reports, it cannot be denied that he has
contributed a lot of benefits to the lives of many
individuals. And as his board of directors said, “The
world is immeasurably better because of Steve”.
