iCampus was a research collaboration between Microsoft and MIT from 1999 to 2006 that aimed to create technologies to revolutionize university education through online laboratories (iLabs) accessible over the Internet. iLabs allow students to perform experiments remotely, and can be shared across universities worldwide to expand access to higher education. The architecture of iLabs has evolved from a centralized lab server model to a more distributed system using a lab broker service in the cloud. Adoption of online learning and cloud technologies by universities has increased, with over 75% of public institutions planning online components and an estimated 50% of classes to be delivered online by 2019.
