Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes. It creates the arch of the foot and supports the arch. Plantar fasciitis causes pain in the bottom of the heel, especially upon waking or after long periods of sitting. It is often caused by improper foot structure, excessive weight or pressure on the foot, repetitive stress, or lack of supportive footwear. Treatment may include rest, ice, stretching, orthotics, night splints, corticosteroid injections, or surgery in severe cases. Preventive measures include wearing supportive shoes, custom orthotics, maintaining a healthy weight, and regular stretching.
