Introduction
Overview
Aim and objectives
The 4th International Holcim Awards competition encourages building solutions and visions that go beyond
convention to address the challenges of sustainability. Registration is open until March 24, 2014
(14:00hrs GMT) at www.holcimawards.org/enter
The Holcim Awards promote innovation in sustainable construction through a series of regional and global
competitions. Prizes at both levels total USD 2 million for each three-year competition cycle.
Project Eligibility
The Holcim Awards competition has two categories: Holcim Awards (main category) and “Next Generation”
(young professionals and students category). In both categories, the project must not have commenced
execution prior to July 1, 2013. There is no limit to the number of projects that any individual or team may enter
in the competition. The same project may only be entered in one of the two project categories.
The Holcim Awards (main category) is open to projects at an advanced stage of design with a high probability
of execution that contribute to the “target issues” for sustainable construction (for more information "target
issues" see p.38 of this guide and: www.holcimawards.org/target). All authors must be at least 18 years of age
(date of birth March 24, 1996 or earlier).
The “Next Generation” (young professionals and students category) is open to visionary projects and bold ideas
that contribute to the “target issues” for sustainable construction. All authors must be aged between 18 and 30
years of age (date of birth between July 2, 1982 and March 24, 1996).
Entries may be submitted only in English, the principal and legally binding language of the Holcim Awards
competition. Submission of entries is only possible using the online entry form. No written applications (hard
copy) will be accepted by the jury. If you have any difficulties in using the online entry form, please contact the

Competition Regions
Entries in the competition are allocated to a region based on the location of the project (not the location of the
Main Author). These regions are based on five geographic areas: Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa,
Middle East, and Asia Pacific. For submissions where no site has been selected, “Region” is defined by the
country of residence of the Main Author.
Prizes
The total prize money for each cycle of the Holcim Awards competitions (regional and global levels) is
USD 2 million.
Holcim Awards (main category)
The total prize money for each of the five regional Holcim Awards competitions is USD 330,000:

region between September and November 2014 in Moscow, Russia (Europe), Toronto, Canada (North America),
Medellín, Colombia (Latin America), Beirut, Lebanon (Africa Middle East), and Jakarta, Indonesia (Asia Pacific).
Global Holcim Awards
The 15 recipients of regional Holcim Awards Gold, Silver and Bronze are automatically nominated for the
Global Holcim Awards in 2015. The prize money of the Global Holcim Awards competition is USD 350,000:

Prizes of the global competition will be presented at dedicated Holcim Awards handover events from May 2015.
Juries
After a centrally-performed technical pre-assessment, individual juries in each of the five regions will evaluate
and rank the respective entries. The juries consist of independent, renowned representatives from science,
business and society. The regional juries are supported by the partner universities of the Holcim Foundation
and coordinated by the Technical Competence Center (TCC) of the Holcim Foundation. The global jury is
supported by the TCC.

Partner Universities
The Holcim Foundation counts upon competent support, especially in the technical field. Some of the world’s
leading technical universities led by the Technical Competence Center (TCC) act as partners to the Holcim
Awards. They define the evaluation criteria to be used for the competitions and host the panels that judge the

Results
Five regional juries, and then a global jury select the competition winners, using the “target issues” for
sustainable construction. Led by the respective partner universities of the Holcim Foundation, the juries consist
of independent, regionally-renowned representatives from science, business and society which are announced
on the Awards website.
The Main Author of all short-listed projects will be contacted following the jury meeting to complete the
project verification process. The actual prize allocated (Holcim Awards Gold or Silver or Bronze, Holcim Awards
Acknowledgement, and “Next Generation” 1st or 2nd or 3rd) will not be disclosed until the regional Awards
hand-over ceremony.
All authors (Main and Further Authors) are informed via email of the results of the regional Awards competition
immediately following the hand-over ceremony.

The Holcim Foundation and its renowned partner universities have identified a set of five “target issues” for
sustainable construction, which serve as a basis for the evaluation of submissions in the Holcim Awards
competition. The “target issues” are:

Participation
Entries in the Holcim Awards (main category) may be submitted by the project’s design team which consists of
the author(s) and all other persons responsible for the project. Eligible for participation are private or public
promoters/investors or architects/planners/engineers involved in the project, providing that they hold the right
of authorship or are participating in agreement with the person(s) holding the right of authorship. Legal
entities and design teams must name an authorized representative who will act as the responsible contact
person (Main Author). All authors must be at least 18 years of age (date of birth March 24, 1996 or earlier).
“Next Generation” (young professionals and students category)
Entries in the “Next Generation” (young professionals and students category) may be submitted by the
project’s design team. All authors must be aged between 18 and 30 years of age (date of birth between July 2,
1982 and March 24, 1996).
Impediments/Conflict of interest
Persons who, due to their collaboration in the preparation or running of the competition, might be in a favored
position, able to influence the jury’s decision or have any other (matured or unmatured) conflict of interest are
ineligible to enter the competition. This concerns, in particular, all jurors, examiners and guests as well as their
spouses, first and second degree relatives or in-laws and their permanent business or project partners and the
immediate superiors and collaborators of ineligible persons. Staff of Holcim and its Group companies, and staff
of the partner and associated universities of the Holcim Foundation may only participate if they are/were not
directly involved in the preparation or running of the competition.


Conditions
Consent
By virtue of participation in or by contribution to the competition, all parties including participants, jurors,
examiners and guests declare their consent to the present conditions. By contributing to the competition,
entrants agree to accept the decision of the respective jury as final. There is no right of appeal and no
participant shall have recourse to any national or international court of law.
Ownership and copyright
Although the right of authorship, including protection against the copying of ideas, and the right to publication
of the design remains with each author, the latter explicitly grants the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable
Construction and the Holcim Group the right to use the data, documents, images and files submitted in its
entirety or partly, in original or edited format, internally or externally, in every form and for any purpose
whatsoever in relation to the Holcim Awards competition.
Documentation
Submitted projects may be compiled by the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction and the Holcim
Group for public access in electronic and/or printed format, giving credit to the authors and their collaborators
in compliance with the authorship declaration.

For construction costs in both groups please use US dollars (USD). The construction costs should include
the following elements:
• Structure - construction works: including excavation, foundations, external walls, internal walls,
floors and ceilings, roofs, structural fittings and other construction-related activities such as site
equipment, scaffolding, and demolition work.

Structure - services: including sewage, water and gas systems, heat supply systems, air treatment
systems, power installations, telecommunications and other communications systems, transport
systems, function-related equipment and fittings, building automation and other services-related
work.

The five steps
Step 4 – Project images
Number of images
A minimum number of five and a maximum of ten images (eg: photos, drawings, plans, etc) plus an additional
author/team photo are allowed. An image file can be composed of two or more images and contain texts and
tables provided readability is assured.
The juries will receive all data provided in both printed and digital format. The printed copies consist of two A3
pages including all images, texts and project information; similar to the confirmation PDF you can download
after submission of your application. The approximate image sizes for printed copies are: images #1 and #2:
142mm x 106.5mm and all further images: 68mm x 51mm.
Image size
Images may not exceed 9000 x 6750 pixels or 15MB. File sizes should be in high-resolution, sufficient to
produce clear images in the application form (at least 2400 x 1800 pixels or 3-5MB recommended as a
minimum). Please allow sufficient time to upload large image files, particularly with slower Internet
connections. Image file names must contain only standard Latin characters.
Image formats
Images are presented in landscape format in the proportion 4:3 (eg: 9000 x 6750, 4500 x 3375, 2400 x 1800
pixels). Portrait format images or landscape images not in ratio 4:3 may be used, but will not utilize the full
image space available.
Images must be in JPG, PNG, BMP or TIF format. AutoCad or PDF files are not permitted. All images must use the
RGB color set. Images in CMYK color set will be converted into RGB, but may lose resolution and not render
colors as accurately.
Step 5 – Revision and submission
The information provided in all steps of the submission process will be reviewed. An error message for missing
or incorrect information will link to the relevant step of the online entry form. At the end of the review process
the application is ready to be submitted.

An entry ID is assigned by the system, and is indicated
in the grey box.

Create a Password for logging-in to the Holcim Awards
online entry form. Please create a strong password that
consists of a minimum eight characters, a mix of upper

Prizes
The total prize money for each cycle of the regional and
global Holcim Awards competitions is USD 2 million. All
prizes are subject to the positive outcome of a verification process to check project eligibility and compliance
with local and international laws and regulations.
Regional prizes

Awards competitions is USD 330,000.

Categories
There are two categories in the Holcim Awards competition. All authors, irrespective of category, must be at

Age restriction - “Next Generation” category
All authors of a “Next Generation” entry must be aged
between 18 and 30 years of age (date of birth between
July 2, 1982 and March 24, 1996).
Main discipline
Please indicate the main discipline of your most recent
study, such as architecture, civil engineering, landscape
architecture, management or urban design.

University contact
“Next Generation” submissions must list the name of
the academic who supervised the research component
of each author’s most recent degree, even if the project
entered in the Holcim Awards competition was created
outside of the scope of the author’s university program.
If the author has/had no supervising academic, please
list the name of the Head of Department of the discipline listed in the “Main discipline” field.

Project summary
The project summary is a concise description of the
project’s overall aims and objectives. The key features of
the project should be clearly described to provide the
jury with an immediate understanding of the project
background, its focus, and outcomes.
Consider the broad range and large number of projects
that will be evaluated by the jury - your project should
stand out. The text may include (but is not limited
to) information such as: overall objective; key targets;
initiator of the project; and funding.
The text can include sub-headings and paragraphs, up

Sustainability concept
The sustainability concept is a comprehensive statement that explains how your project contributes to
meeting the five “target issues” for sustainable construction. The statement should both explain the wide
scope of the response to all target issues and also focus
on the key strengths of your project. It is recommended
that the information submitted through the images
and their captions should complement the key themes
of the sustainability concept.

The gross volume of buildings is calculated from their
outer delimiting surfaces in cubic meters (m3).
Construction costs
Please use US dollars (USD). The construction costs
should include the following elements:
Structure - construction works: including excavation,

ceilings, roofs, structural fittings and other construction-related activities such as site equipment, scaffolding, and demolition work.

Images
A minimum number of five and a maximum of ten
images (eg: photos, drawings, plans, etc) plus an additional author/team photo are allowed. An image file
can be composed of two or more images and contain
texts and tables provided readability is assured.
The juries will receive all data provided in both printed
and digital format. The printed copies consist of two A3
pages including all images, texts and project information; similar to the confirmation PDF you can download
after submission of your application. The approximate
image sizes for printed copies are: images #1 and #2:
127mm x 96mm and all further images: 63mm x 46mm.
Key images
Key images are presented in a larger format and should
therefore be the most compelling visual representations of the project. Only two images may be uploaded
as Key images.
Image formats
Images are presented in landscape format in the proportion 4:3 (eg: 9000 x 6750, 4500 x 3375, 2400 x 1800
pixels). Portrait format images or landscape images
not in ratio 4:3 may be used, but will not utilize the full
image space available. Images must be in JPG, PNG,
BMP or TIF format. AutoCad or PDF files are not permitted. All images must use the RGB color set. Images in
CMYK color set will be converted into RGB, but may lose
resolution and not render colors as accurately.

Image size
Images may not exceed 9000 x 6750 pixels or 15MB.
File sizes should be in high-resolution, sufficient to
produce clear images in the application form (at least
2400 x 1800 pixels or 3-5MB recommended as a minimum). Please allow sufficient time to upload large
image files, particularly with slower Internet connections. Image file names must contain only standard
Latin characters.

Data transfer rate
Depending on the data transfer rate of your Internet
connection, the upload process may take up to several
minutes - so please have some patience. At the end of
the entry period we anticipate a high volume of traffic
on the webserver and the response time of the online
entry form may slow down.

“Target issues” for sustainable construction
The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction is committed to the “triple bottom line” concept,
which asserts that long-term and sustainable progress requires the balanced achievement of economic
development, environmental performance and social advancement.
Based on this concept and to make sustainable construction easier to understand, evaluate and apply,
the Holcim Foundation and its renowned partner universities identified a set of five “target issues” for
sustainable construction, which serve as evaluation criteria for the Holcim Awards and as a basis for all
activities of the Holcim Foundation.

Innovation and transferability – PROGRESS
The project must demonstrate innovation at the forefront of sustainable construction.
Breakthroughs and trend-setting approaches, irrespective of scale, must be transferable to a range
of other applications.
Innovative concepts regarding design, integration of materials and products, structure, enclosure and
building services.
Outstanding approaches regarding construction technology and processes, operation and maintenance.
Contributions to the disciplines of architecture, urban and landscape design, civil, urban and
environmental engineering and other related fields pertaining to construction.
Long-term monitoring to evaluate the fulfillment of the initial expectations and goals.
Dissemination of knowledge (project documentation and communication, education and training).

The project must adhere to the highest ethical standards and support social equity at all stages of
construction, from planning and building processes to long-term impact on the fabric of that
community. The project has to provide an advanced response in terms of ethical and social
responsibility.

resources is concerned. Funding must promote an economy of means and be compatible with the
demands and constraints encountered throughout the construction’s life span.

Financial resources over the project's life cycle and their regional impact.
Flexibility with regard to future changes (user, ownership, laws and regulations).
Robustness to economic conditions (interest rates, taxes, inflation).

Contextual and aesthetic impact – PROFICIENCY
The project must convey a high standard of architectural quality in the w ay it addresses cultural and
physical factors. With space and form of utmost significance, the construction must have a lasting
aesthetic impact on its surrounding environment.

Interdependencies of landscape, infrastructure, urban fabric and architecture.
