Accessible Information Standard
James Watson-O’Neill, SignHealth
Abigail Gorman, SignHealth
AccessibleInformationStandard2016
In 2016, theAccessible Information Standard (AIS) was established to ensure that patients could have access to
communication and information in an accessible manner.
Ask - find out if a person has any communication or information needs because of a disability or loss of a sense, and if they
do, what those needs are.
Record - record these needs in a way that is clear, unambiguous, and consistent in electronic and/or paper-based
administrative record systems and documents.
Flag - make sure that a person's recorded needs are "highly visible" whenever their record is looked at.
Share - include information about people's information and communication needs as part of existing data sharing
processes (and in line with existing information governance frameworks).
Meet - take steps to make sure that people can get and understand the information they need and get help with
communication if they need it.
AccessibleInformationStandardreview
Results
Only 11% of
patients covered
by the Standard
have
equitable access
to the NHS.
Contactmethods
“I avoid seeking medical care because of the communication barrier from the point of being ill
to getting better it is a nightmare, trying to seek advice is impossible booking the appointment
i have to physically attend knowing the diagnosis and treatment plan is impossible for me to
understand and any follow up care I wouldn’t have a clue without BSL support.”
67% of Deaf people reported that no
accessible method of contacting their GP
has been made available to them.
Communicationsupport
77 % of people with accessible information
needs reported rarely or never receiving
information in alternative formats.
Complaintsprocedures
59% of complaints procedures were
reported to be inaccessible.
Training
1 in 3 health and social care providers were
unaware or unsure of the existence of the
AIS.
“I asked someone at my GP surgery to email me my
information from now on so that I could read it, she
said that my partner could just read the normal letter
to me.When I told them about the NHS Information
Standard, they didn’t know what I was talking about.“
37% of professionals reported that
their service never provide
training linked to the AIS
Trustin healthcareproviders
Poor experiences of access
sometimes result in patients
deciding not to seek out
medical care because they
are uncertain about how
they will be treated, listened
to, and valued by health
professionals.
“I haven't seen a GP
since 2015. That is to
do with the fact that I
find it difficult to
access the service
itself because I don’t
get the right support.”
Nextsteps
• NHS England’s review of the Standard
• Need to increase awareness of the Standard
• Improve training for NHS and Social Care staff
• Increase awareness among disabled people
