This document discusses different perspectives on development and progress. It notes that development is often equated with economic growth and consumption. An anthropologist argues for a new paradigm of "de-development" of rich countries instead of pushing poor countries to develop. He argues the planet only has enough resources for each person to consume 1.8 global hectares annually. So we should find ways for rich countries to "catch down" their consumption to more sustainable levels, rather than expecting poor countries to continue growing to catch up. The concept of "buen vivir" or good living from Latin America is presented as a positive alternative framework.
