Unwind Message
Many people will go through experiences in their lives where they feel like they are
changing. It is as if life has dealt them enough experiences that their personalities
have been altered because of it. Unwind by Neal Shusterman shows how the past
experiences people go through may dictate who they become and the decisions they
may make in the future through the lives of Roland, Admiral Dunfee, and Lev.
Throughout the novel, Roland is portrayed as an aggressive young man who has the
desire to fight anyone who gets in his way. Yet as the readers soon discover, he is a
young man with a very troubled past. Roland s past shapes who he becomes today
in that he is very distrusting of women due to the experiences he has gone through.
As Connor finds out in the basement of the antique shop, Roland s mother
essentially abandoned him for her husband. As the novel states, That s not what did
him in, though. Roland had beaten up his stepfather for beating his mom. The
mother took her husband s side, and the stepfather got off with a warning. Roland,
on the other hand, was sent to be unwound (Schusterman 99). After Roland s mother
abandoned him for his stepfather, he began to fight other individuals in order to
gain power. Another example of Roland s distrust for women comes at the very end
of the novel when he is being unwound and he is recalling memories from his past.
Roland recalls, When I was three, I had a babysitter. She was beautiful. She shook
my sister. Real hard. My sister got wrong. Never got right again. Beautiful is
dangerous. Better get them first (Schusterman 293). After this experience, Roland is
likely to never trust women, or other beautiful people, again. For him to experience
both his mother s abandonment and his sister s injuries at the hand of the babysitter,
Roland chooses not to trust women again, resulting in his poor treatment of Risa, and
the other females he comes in contact with.
Admiral Dunfee, similarly, is affected by his past. When the novel first introduces
the Admiral, he is portrayed as a cold hearted dictator in charge of hundreds of

In The Rant by Andrew Case, the space that is presented to the audience is very
irregular. The play begins outside at the front of a murder scene; tranquil and then
harmful. The audience is then presented with a switch in locations to an interview
room that is safe and secure. This transition between locations makes the audiencefeel
as though time is moving by at an extremely fast rate but in reality, it is just scenes
changing each moment. These transitions consistently keep the audience on their toes
making them beg for more. As the playprogresses; scene by scene, the audience is
presented with different rants from each character. The rant between Reeves and
Mahnaz, Mahnaz to Stern, Mahnaz to Simmons, all come together to form one big
story. This rapid alteration between rants causes time to seem as though it does not
stand still, but instead remain hectic and out of control. Andrew Case, makes the
play, to me, seem like a fast moving edge of seat thriller where the action swallows
you and causes you to get involved in the conflict of the play. The mood that is
formed helps show this predicament by portraying irritation, retribution, and a desire
to find out what actually happened. The audience, and even the characters presented
in the play, are now motivated to discover what actually happened on that front porch
of that warm summer night in August. The entire play seems to come together in a

Reverend Thomas, Robert Malthus was a political/classical economist born in the

literature, and arts. Malthus was married in the early 1800 s and had three children.
Malthus is most famous for his theories on population growth and how he proposed

Childhood and Education
Thomas Malthus, more commonly called Robert, was born near Guildford, Surrey,
England. His parents, Daniel and Henrietta, had seven children in total with
Malthus being either the sixth or seventh in the line (different sources claim both as
true). Malthus and his siblings received their preliminary education at home
working with private tutors where he excelled primarily in literature and
mathematics despite the fact that he had a speech impediment due to a hair lip and
cleft palate. His tutor, Daniel Malthus, sent him to study with Richard Graves at
Claverton for a short while before sending him to Gilbert Wakefield at the
Dissenting Academy of Warrington in 1782. However, in 1783 the Warrington was
closed due to funding issues and a decline in students. There was, however, an
