Intensity of food production
Intensity Of Food Production
Intensification of food productionMake full use and increase the productivity of a landProductivityAmount of food / amount of resources used to produce foodFactors affecting productivityPhysical factorsReliefSoilClimate
ReliefThe difference between the highest and lowest elevations in an area. Refers to physical height and slope of the landGentle/ flat relief:_____________Facilitates movement and transportation.
SoilProductivity depends on fertility of soilRequires right amount of water, sunlight, air and nutrientsWhere can you find fertile soils? _____________________________
ClimateRefers to atmospheric conditions of a specific place over a considerable period of time (30-35 years)High temperature & rainfall :___________
Social factorsLand fragmentation= land is divided into smaller plots= Resultant plots will eventually become small over time
Social factorsLand tenureA land which is owned by an individual/government, who is said to "hold" the land.Farmers must pay a sum of money or give a portion of their crops to get the right to live on, work and use the land.Little motivation for the farmers.
Political factorsGovernment policies Government has a final say on how resources are to be used to bring greater development in the country.
New Food Self-Sufficiency Policy Could Revive Farming in Singapore Singapore. Wong KokFah, one of Singapore’s last remaining farmers, can finally see a future for his vegetable business after 30 years of back-breaking work. Plans by the industrialized city-state to set aside more land for farming to boost food security have given him hope that the fourth generation of the Wong family can continue the business started by his grandfather. “In the past, my thinking was I’ll do it for as long as I can,” said Wong, a stocky 48-year-old with a prematurely aged face. “It’s difficult for the next generation to continue in this business if there’s no help from the government,” he said. “How could I make any plans for my business when I could see no future in it?
Agricultural Types – High-Tech Farming High-tech farming uses modern machinery and farm chemicals to obtain maximum yield from a given plot of land or a group of animals.
It is practised in countries such as the United States of America, United Kingdom and Singapore.Fruit and Vegetable Farming Crops in a hydroponics farm are cultivated in troughs filled with a nutrient solution and are grown under carefully controlled conditions with the help of computers.
Plants in an aeroponics farm have their roots suspended in the air, with a nutrient solution being sprayed onto the roots. The air is cooled to simulate conditions found in temperate regions.Agricultural Types – High-Tech FarmingAnimal Farming In cattle farming, cows are housed in special stalls, fed a special diet at exact times and milked by machines daily at appointed times.
For egg farming in a modern chicken farm, hens are fed a special diet blended by computerised machines, and eggs are collected efficiently by conveyor belts.Milking of cows using special machines.Eggs are collected via conveyor belts, saving both time and effort.
Agricultural Types – High-Tech Farming
Technological factorsUse of modern machines and farming methods to have greater control over the physical limitationsThe Green RevolutionDue to rapid population growth, a need to increase food productionIncorporate modern technology to overcome food shortage and help subsistence farmers in LDCs to increase their income.
High yielding varietiesImproved strains of rice, wheat and other cerealsDeveloped by cross breedingHYVs have special traits: pest resistance and shorter growth periodE.g: IR58 = 100 days IR8 =130 days
Modern irrigation methodsIrrigation= practice of supplying water to the land through artificial meansBenefitsControl the amount of water supplied to the crop
Ensure that crop receive enough water at all seasonsUse of chemicalsFertilisersSubstances added to provide nutrients for healthy growthPesticides- Toxic chemicals used to remove pests from affecting the cropsHerbicides- Herbicides is used to remove the weeds because removing by hand is time consuming and laborious
