Introduction
O The Internet of Things (IoT) is a scenario
in which objects, animals or people are
provided with unique identifiers and the
ability to transfer data over a network
without requiring human-to-human or
human-to-computer interaction. IoT has
evolved from the convergence
of wireless technologies, micro-
electromechanical systems (MEMS) and
the Internet.
O A thing, in the Internet of Things, can be a person with a
heart monitor implant, a farm animal with a biochip
transponder, an automobile that has built-in sensors to
alert the driver when tire pressure is low -- or any other
natural or man-made object that can be assigned an IP
address and provided with the ability to transfer data
over a network. So far, the Internet of Things has been
most closely associated with machine-to-machine
(M2M) communication in manufacturing and power, oil
and gas utilities. Products built with M2M communication
capabilities are often referred to as being smart.
O IoT is expected to offer advanced connectivity of
devices, systems, and services that goes
beyond machine-to-machine communications
(M2M) and covers a variety of protocols, domains, and
applications.[1] The interconnection of these embedded
devices (including smart objects), is expected to usher in
automation in nearly all fields, while also enabling
advanced applications like a Smart Grid.
TrendsO Intelligence- In the future the Internet of Things may be a non-deterministic and open
network in which auto-organized or intelligent entities (Web services, SOA components),
virtual objects (avatars) will be interoperable and able to act independently (pursuing their
own objectives or shared ones) depending on the context, circumstances or
environments.
O Architecture- Building on top of the Internet of Things, the Web of Things is an
architecture for the application layer of the Internet of Things looking at the convergence
of data from IoT devices into Web applications to create innovative use-cases.
O Complex system- In semi-open or closed loops (i.e. value chains, whenever a global
finality can be settled) it will therefore be considered and studied as a Complex
system[70] due to the huge number of different links and interactions between
autonomous actors, and its capacity to integrate new actors. At the overall stage (full
open loop) it will likely be seen as a chaotic environment (since systems have always
finality).
O Size considerations- The Internet of objects would encode 50 to 100 trillion objects, and
be able to follow the movement of those objects. Human beings in surveyed urban
environments are each surrounded by 1000 to 5000 trackable objects.
O Space considerations- If in the Internet of Things, things are able to take actions on
their own initiative, this human-centric mediation role is eliminated, and the time-space
context that we as humans take for granted must be given a central role in this
information ecosystem. Just as standards play a key role in the Internet and the Web,
geospatial standards will play a key role in the Internet of Things.
O A Basket of Remotes- According to the CEO of Cisco, the remote control market is
expected to be a $USD 19 trillion market.
IoT in next 5 years…
O Every tech savvy is eying on the ongoing Las Vegas Consumer
Electronics Show 2015 where many big announcements are being
observed and there will lot more to expect from the event. One of
the biggest announcements so far has been that Samsung CEO BK
Yoon has exclusively shared that the company will largely focus on
Internet of Things in 2015 and in next five years, almost every
upcoming device, up to 90% from Samsung will incorporate Internet
of Things.
O If that comes out to be true, one can expect an entirely new,
reshaped tech world in which every household item, from our chairs
to our doors, from our bathrooms to our windows, everything will be
connected to the internet and its sure thing that big players in
gadget industry like Samsung, Apple and Google will be the
companies people eye upon regarding to accomplish this intriguing
task. And in this race, its high chance some of the big players will
be wiped off from the scene as a new wave of competition will
begin. Only those will survive that will embark innovation and spend
heavily in the whole new trend.
Interest AreasO My research interests are in the area of
microelectronics/nano electronics, with applications in
measurement, instrumentation, high temperature
applications, medical electronics and integrated sensors;
and computer-based electronic analysis and simulation.
O My innovations might affect many different industrial sectors
by supporting important future IoT product . Some of these
technologies such as embedded or cyber-physical systems
form the edges of the Internet of Things bridging the gap
between cyber space and the physical world of real things,
and are crucial in enabling the Internet of Things to deliver
on its vision and become part of bigger systems in a world
of “systems of systems”.
O If given an internship in this area, I would intend to work on
sensors by collecting and processing the data to detect the
changes in the physical status of things and smart
technology by enhancing the power of network by devolving
processing capabilities to different part of the network.
Thank you
