Introduction to
Andragogy: Adult
Learning Theory
Andragogy is the study of how adults
learn, in contrast to pedagogy which
focuses on child learning. This adult
learning theory provides valuable insights
into designing effective education and
training programs for mature students.
Andragogy
• Means the understanding of the science
and practice of adult learning.
• Is humanitarian attempt to conceptualize
adult education to specific methods and
practices.
• Andragogy as “the art and science of
helping adult’s learn”.
• Pedagogy as “the art and science of
teaching children”.
Malcolm Shepherd Knowles
• Born on April 24, 1913 in Livingstone,
Montana and died November 27, 1997,
at the age of 84.
• He was an American educator well
known for the use of the term
Andragogy as synonymous to adult
education. According to Malcolm
Knowles, andragogy is the art and
science of adult learning, thus
andragogy refers to any form of adult
learning. (Kearsley, 2010).
Malcolm Shepherd Knowles
Moves from dependency to increasing
selfdirectedness as he/she matures and can
direct his/her own learning;
• Draws on his/her accumulated reservoir of
life
experiences to aid learning;
• Is ready to learn when he/she assumes new
social or life roles;
• Is problem-centered and wants to apply new
learning immediately; and
• Is motivated to learn by internal, rather than
external, factors.
Five Assumptions of Adult Learning Theory
Self-Concept
Adults have a self-directed,
autonomous self-concept as
learners.
Experience
Adults have a rich reservoir of
life experiences that shape
their learning.
Readiness to Learn
Adults are ready to learn
when the learning aligns
with their life tasks.
Orientation to Learning
Adults are problem-centered and life-focused
in their learning orientation.
Motivation
Adults are internally motivated and driven by
personal growth and development.
Importance of
Andragogy in Adult
Education
1 Learner-Centered
Andragogy focuses
on the unique needs
and experiences of
adult students.
2 Practical Application
Adult learners seek
education that can
be immediately
applied to real-world
situations.
3 Motivation and Engagement
Andragogy emphasizes intrinsic motivation and
active engagement of adult students.
Key Concepts and Principles
of Andragogy
Self-Directed
Adults take an active role in
planning and directing their
own learning.
Experiential Learning
Adults learn best through
hands-on experience and
problem-solving.
Goal-Oriented
Adult learners are motivated by
clear goals and the ability to
apply new knowledge.
Collaborative Learning
Adults benefit from interactive,
peer-to-peer learning
environments.
THANK YOU!
