London's Calling 2018 - No Connection, No ProblemKeir Bowden
This document summarizes a presentation about building offline-capable mobile apps using the Salesforce Mobile SDK. It discusses how offline support is often underscoped by developers and oversimplified by stakeholders. The presentation demonstrates building an offline-enabled training app using the Salesforce Mobile SDK and SmartStore to cache data locally on the device. It covers topics like the app architecture, data model, caching data with SmartStore, querying data, and debugging offline apps. Lessons learned include the importance of storyboarding the app, avoiding anonymous functions, and that offline capabilities are not magic and require asynchronous programming and terminology different than online apps.

Exceptional Behaviors: How Frequently Are They Tested? (AST 2025)Andre Hora
Exceptions allow developers to handle error cases expected to occur infrequently. Ideally, good test suites should test both normal and exceptional behaviors to catch more bugs and avoid regressions. While current research analyzes exceptions that propagate to tests, it does not explore other exceptions that do not reach the tests. In this paper, we provide an empirical study to explore how frequently exceptional behaviors are tested in real-world systems. We consider both exceptions that propagate to tests and the ones that do not reach the tests. For this purpose, we run an instrumented version of test suites, monitor their execution, and collect information about the exceptions raised at runtime. We analyze the test suites of 25 Python systems, covering 5,372 executed methods, 17.9M calls, and 1.4M raised exceptions. We find that 21.4% of the executed methods do raise exceptions at runtime. In methods that raise exceptions, on the median, 1 in 10 calls exercise exceptional behaviors. Close to 80% of the methods that raise exceptions do so infrequently, but about 20% raise exceptions more frequently. Finally, we provide implications for researchers and practitioners. We suggest developing novel tools to support exercising exceptional behaviors and refactoring expensive try/except blocks. We also call attention to the fact that exception-raising behaviors are not necessarily “abnormal” or rare.

Explaining GitHub Actions Failures with Large Language Models Challenges, In...ssuserb14185
GitHub Actions (GA) has become the de facto tool that developers use to automate software workflows, seamlessly building, testing, and deploying code. Yet when GA fails, it disrupts development, causing delays and driving up costs. Diagnosing failures becomes especially challenging because error logs are often long, complex and unstructured. Given these difficulties, this study explores the potential of large language models (LLMs) to generate correct, clear, concise, and actionable contextual descriptions (or summaries) for GA failures, focusing on developers’ perceptions of their feasibility and usefulness. Our results show that over 80% of developers rated LLM explanations positively in terms of correctness for simpler/small logs. Overall, our findings suggest that LLMs can feasibly assist developers in understanding common GA errors, thus, potentially reducing manual analysis. However, we also found that improved reasoning abilities are needed to support more complex CI/CD scenarios. For instance, less experienced developers tend to be more positive on the described context, while seasoned developers prefer concise summaries. Overall, our work offers key insights for researchers enhancing LLM reasoning, particularly in adapting explanations to user expertise.

Talk Track:
Before I begin, just a quick note that when considering future developments, whether by us or with any other solution provider, you should always base your purchasing decisions on what is currently available.
#5: This workshop is simple. After I finish providing you with this brief overview of the workshop scope, I will guide you through getting a new Developer Edition organization.
Even if you already have one, it’s a good idea to get a new one now. After that, you’ll complete a series of exercises using the workbook. It should take you about 30 minutes to complete the exercises. If you run out of time, don’t worry, there’s a few extra minutes between each workshop, and you can always finish on your own time later.
If you have any questions while you complete the exercises, just raise your hand and one of the staff here will be happy to assist you.
#6: Before you learn what you’ll be doing, let’s briefly talk about Responsive Design
#7: Web pages built using responsive design techniques respond to the capabilities of the device they are viewed on, changing their layout based on the viewport size, for example. All of the original content is still accessible, but may require an additional click or two to access.
#8: Responsive frameworks rely on a fluid grid - this breaks the page content up into rows and columns, typically 12 columns per row. When the device viewport goes below a certain size, the content is stacked vertically resulting in 1 column per row.
#9: Responsive Design is important when designing Visualforce pages for use in Salesforce1, as the user may be accessing the page via a number of different devices.
#10: With this in mind, now let’s learn what will you be doing in this workshop.
#11: In this workshop, you are going to create a simple Visualforce page using the standard component library to display details of multiple cases and add this to the Salesforce1 application. You’ll then view the page on a mobile phone which will show how the page is not responsive.
#12: Next you’ll create a responsive Visualforce page using the Bootstrap framework, add this page to Salesforce1 and see how the layout changes when viewed on a mobile phone.
#13: Finally, you’ll improve the user interface for tablet devices, ensuring maximum use is made of the available screen real estate.
#14: That’s it for the introduction. Now it’s time to turn to your workbook and start developing.
#15: The first thing you need to do is get a new DE org. A lot of people think they have a DE org and they don’t. Or think they’ll just use their company org, which is usually a mistake. Everyone should get a new DE org now.
[Walk them through this.]
#16: Remember, if you have any questions, please raise your hand and someone will come by to help.
