The Marine Institute was established in 1991 Act as the National Agency with
the brief to:
to undertake, to co-ordinate, to promote marine research and development …to
provide services related to research and development to promote economic
development, ….protect the marine environment

A Blue Planet
• The ocean covers more than 70%
of the Earth’s surface. (NOAA)
• An estimated 50-80% of all life on
earth is found under the ocean
surface. (UNESCO)
• Fisheries provide over 15 percent
of the dietary intake of animal
protein (UNESCO)
• Over 90% of international trade
relies on marine transport (EC)
• Coastal population increase (44%
globally, 53% in US, UN Atlas)
• The ocean plays a major role in
regulating the weather and
climate of the planet (NOAA) Image: Google, INFOMAR

Harnessing Our Ocean Wealth
National Marine Plan
1. Thriving Maritime Economy
2. Healthy Ecosystems
3. Engaging with the Sea
Ireland's Marine Data Opportunity (Eoin O'Grady)
A Digital World
“The digital economy is developing rapidly worldwide. It is the
single most important driver of innovation, competitiveness and
growth...How European businesses adopt digital technologies will
be a key determinant of their future growth.”
European Commission (2014)
A Digital World
“The digital economy is estimated to be
currently worth €12.3 billion or 6% of GDP
in Ireland - a value that has grown from
€4.3 billion in 2009. With sustained
momentum, we could expand that value to
€21.4 billion (7.9% of GDP) by 2020, create
at least 56,000 extra jobs and enhance
productivity across our economy in the
same period.”

Ireland's Marine Data Opportunity (Eoin O'Grady)
Ireland’s Marine Data Opportunity
• Ireland has an extensive marine resource and
a large technology base
• New technologies are enabling new activities
and generating vast amounts of new data
• This presents an opportunity for Ireland
1. to develop new marine-related digital products
and services
2. to better understand our marine supporting
sustainable development
• No one organisation does all this, a
collaborative ecosystem is needed
“The ability to unlock the full value of data becomes
a key source of competitive advantage”
Porter1 & Heppelmann2 (2015)
