Japan is an island country located in East Asia. It is made up of over 6,800 islands stretching from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south. The four main islands are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku which make up about 97% of Japan's land area. Mountains cover about 70% of the country's terrain. Japan has a population of over 126 million people and has a highly developed economy focused on manufacturing. The official language is Japanese and the main religions practiced are Shintoism and Buddhism.
