Fun with JavaFX8 on the Raspberry Pi

JavaFX can be used to create user interfaces for embedded systems like the Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone Black. While Java's "write once, run anywhere" mantra does not directly apply to embedded due to different requirements and constraints, much code can be reused from mobile and desktop applications by focusing on content over elaborate graphics, limiting the number of nodes in the scene graph, and avoiding memory-intensive operations. With optimization, JavaFX applications can run well on embedded devices with as few as 3-60 nodes in the scene graph.

She is audacious—taking bold risks with confidence. A Chayil woman has backbone—strength of character, will and determination; Spirit—energy with determination and assertiveness; And guts—personal courage with tough character, true grit—courage with resolve. High performance json- postgre sql vs. mongodbWei Shan Ang PostgreSQL and MongoDB were benchmarked for performance on common operations like inserts, updates, and selects using a JSON document format. The key findings were:
1) PostgreSQL generally had lower latency but required extensive tuning to achieve high performance, while MongoDB delivered reasonable performance out of the box.
2) MongoDB showed unstable throughput and latency over time due to a cache eviction bug.
3) PostgreSQL did not scale well to large connection loads without connection pooling, while MongoDB scaled horizontally more easily.
4) Both databases had pros and cons for their data models, query capabilities, and upgrade processes. The optimal choice depends on an application's specific requirements.

Users of mobile platforms are expecting more and more complex graphics on their devices. This means that taking advantage of the mobile GPUs efficiently is essential. A large part of this efficiency is dependent on the user-space drivers. Unfortunately being in user-space means that many GPU providers can get away with only providing a closed-source driver which hides a lot of the secrets needed to be efficient. This talk presents a project providing an open-source alternative including support for embedded platforms.
Mesa is the standard open-source user-space library providing an implementation of the OpenGL, GLES and Vulkan APIs on Linux platforms. It has drivers for a range of different hardware. This talk will present the project, the user-space graphics stack and the inner workings of Mesa. It will then continue to present the embedded drivers that it supports such as Freedreno for the Adreno platform, Panfrost for Mali Midgard and Bifrost GPUs and the drivers for Broadcom GPUs.

En dat is waar het leuk begint te worden: met de juiste software kun je niet alleen TV ontvangen maar ook portofoons, scheepvaartverkeer, en.. signalen van ADS-B transponders van commercieel vliegverkeer. In deze sessie laat ik zien hoe je met een USB-stick van 7 dollar ADS-B berichten van vliegtuigen kunt ontvangen. Ik leg uit hoe je die data met een Java-applicatie kunt verwerken en kunt visualiseren via de Google maps API. Het eindresultaat is een webapplicatie die een actuele weergave van het vliegverkeer boven Nederland geeft.

We measure the quality of the tests with line coverage or (even better) branch coverage. This gives you a false sense of security. I've seen projects with tests which have 100% branch coverage but not a single assertion! This is where mutation testing helps out. By creating broken mutated instances of your codebase (mutants) this should result in failing unit tests. This way we can verify that slight code changes (like real life bugs) actually break your tests. In this talk I'll explain what mutation testing is and how it works. We'll also compare some Java frameworks (PIT, Jester, Jumble) that enable automatic mutation testing in your continuous build and how you can start doing mutation testing *right now*.

Maar wat betekent dit voor de prestaties van onze Java-toepassingen? Kunnen we nu meteen volledig al onze CPU-cores benutten om betere responstijden te krijgen? Zijn lambda's sneller dan inner klassen? - Al deze vragen worden beantwoord in deze sessie.
