The joints of the thoracic spine can be divided into two groups. The joints present throughout the vertebral column are the intervertebral joints between vertebral bodies and the joints between vertebral arches. The joints unique to the thoracic spine are the costovertebral joints between the vertebrae and ribs and the costotransverse joints between the ribs and transverse processes. There are also joints between the ribs, ribs and sternum, sternum and clavicles, and parts of the sternum. These thoracic joints are strengthened by numerous ligaments and allow limited movement necessary for respiration.
