Brief History of Community Development
1970s –Federal Reserve Banks begin to
develop staff to facilitate compliance of Fed-
regulated banks with fair lending laws and
the Community Reinvestment Act (1977)
Evolved from narrower technical assistance
to a wider focus on promoting community
development by bringing stakeholders
together and producing quality research to
fill knowledge gaps and highlight investment
opportunities
“By serving as a neutral information
broker, the Federal Reserve has helped
to foster relationships among market
participants and has promoted the
development of new and innovative
funding arrangements”
-Governor Ned Gramlich

Tools
Research and Analysis: We conduct original research that informs
stakeholders, policymakers, and community members. We combine insights
from our outreach with quantitative analysis of a variety of data sources.
Outreach and Convenings: We bring together groups that may not
otherwise meet in convenings ranging from small internal roundtables to
large public events. We bring together policymakers, lenders, developers,
philanthropies, researchers, community organizations, and more. We also
participate in and speak at external conferences and events.
