What is a Network?
A communication network is
a group of computers that use
a set of common
communication protocols over
digital interconnections for the
purpose of sharing resources
located on or provided by the
network nodes.
Importance of Computer Network
LAN, WAN, MAN
Types of Computer Network
Local Area Network
Metropolitan Area Network
Wide Area Network
Local Area Network (LAN)
A local area network or LAN is a network that
connects computers within a limited area.
This might be in a school, an office or even a home.
It shares a common communications line or wireless
link to a server within a distinct geographic area.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a computer network that
interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic region of
the size of a metropolitan area.
The term MAN is applied to the interconnection of (LANs) in a city into
a single larger network which may then also offer efficient connection
to a WAN.
It is an interconnection of several LANs in a metropolitan area through
the use of point-to-point connections between them.
Wide Area Network (WAN)
A wide area network (WAN) is a telecommunications network that
extends over a large geographic area for the primary purpose
of computer networking.
It covers a larger geographical area, usually with a radius of more
than a kilometer.
We can say that Internet is the second name for WAN.
Real-time Examples

Applications of Computer Networks
Information and
Resource Sharing
•Programs and software in any computer can be accessed by
other computers linked to the network allowing the sharing
of hardware equipment, like printers and scanners among
varied users.
Retrieving Remote
Information
•The information is stored in remote databases to which the
user gains access through information systems like the World
Wide Web.
Speedy
Interpersonal
Communication
•Electronic Mail (email) is extensively used for sending texts,
documents, images, and videos across the globe.
Highly Reliable
Systems
• Computer networks allow systems to be distributed
in nature, by the virtue of which data is stored in
multiple sources. Thus, making it highly reliable.
E-Commerce
• Users and organizations can pool funds, buy or sell
items, pay bills, manage bank accounts, pay taxes,
transfer funds and handle investments electronically.
Cost–Effective
Systems
• Computer networks have reduced the cost of
establishment of computer systems in organizations.
