• #4: In 1991, a Finnish university student named Linus Torvalds was unhappy with Microsoft DOS and Windows 3.1, but really liked the UNIX systems he used at school. Unfortunately, UNIX which multi-tasking, multi-user computer operating system originally developed in 1969 by a group of AT&T employees at Bell Labs, was not cheaply available for home use, so he decided to write his own, free version.At one point, people started discussing what Linux's mascot should be. Linus likes penguins a lot, and suggested it. A fellow named Larry Ewing drew "Tux The Penguin," and he's been the mascot since!
• #5: Free: It can be copied and distributed without fees or royalties. The source code for Linux is available on the Internet to anyone who wants it. You can also purchase copies from different Linux distributors. What Are These "Distributions?"A number of companies are selling Linux. Their versions, called distributions, may still be retrieved freely over the Internet, as well as cheaply or freely on CDROM discs, but the packaged versions have the advantage of often being bundled with commercial application programs (word processors, etc.), a large manual, and technical support. Sometimes you'll hear people abbreviate distribution as `distro.'When it comes to stability and price, Linux is an excellent choice for running a server. A server is a computer that makes resources (such as web pages, a shared printer, shared files, etc.) available to users on other computers in a network (like the Internet, or a small network in an office). most desktops use Microsoft Windows and most supercomputers use Linux. The development of Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration; typically all the underlying source code can be used, freely modified, and redistributed, both commercially and non-commercially, by anyone under licenses such as the GNU General Public License. Typically Linux is packaged in a format known as a Linux distribution for desktop and server use. Some popular mainstream Linux distributions include Debian (and its derivatives such as Ubuntu), Fedora and openSUSE. Linux distributions include the Linux kernel, supporting utilities and libraries and usually a large amount of application software to fulfill the distribution's intended use.Linux runs on a wide variety of computer hardware, including mobile phones, tablet computers, routers, televisions[12][13], video game consoles, desktop computers, mainframes and supercomputers.[14][15][16][17] Linux is a leading server operating system, and runs the 10 fastest supercomputers in the world.[18]

• #8: There may be too many distributions of Linux, it's possible that this is hurting Linux in the marketplace. It could be that the lack of a Linux distro from a major computer company is also hurting it in the marketplace. IBM is a big Linux backer but does not have their own branded distribution. Currently there seem to be many nice things said about the Ubuntu distribution.The market share of Linux or Microsoft Windows is difficult to determine as users of the former are usually not required to register with any organization to use their copies; additionally, a large number of unlicensed (illegal) copies of Windows exist. The following desktop usage share data is estimated from web browser user agent strings, rather than actual sales information or detailed surveys.
• #9: You can "dual-boot," which means every time you turn on your computer (called "booting it up"), you will be asked whether you want to start Windows or Linux (or any other Operating Systems you may have). You can also run Windows from inside Linux, using special software. Windows may boot to multiple versions of Windows, whereas Linux may boot to multiple operating systems through numerous bootloaders. If you simply wish to get to your Windows files, that's easy, too. Many Linux programs can read and write standard Windows files.Cost: For desktop or home use, Linux is very cheap or free, Windows is expensive. For server use, Linux is very cheap compared to Windows. Microsoft allows up to 3 copies to be used on multiple computers. In contrast, once you have purchased Linux, you can run it on any number of computers for no additional charge. You can buy a Linux book and get the operating system included with the book for free. You can also download Linux for free from each of the Linux vendors (assuming your Internet connection is fast enough for a 600 MB file and you have a CD burner) or from www.linuxiso.org. The irony here is that Windows rose to dominance, way back when, in large part by undercutting the competition (Macs) on cost. Now Linux may do the same thing to Windows. Linux is customizable in a way that Windows is not. For one, the user interface, while similar in concept, varies in detail from distribution to distribution. For example, the task bar may default to being on the top or the bottom. • #10: It seems safe to say that a sizable proportion of Linux PC users in the world today installed the free and open source operating system on hardware that originally came loaded with Windows. After all, while there are preloaded systems available, it often ends up being cheaper to buy a Windows PC and load Linux yourself.Once Windows 8 starts shipping on PCs, however, that may no longer be possible. It turns out that a new feature included in the operating system in the name of security may also effectively make it impossible to load Linux on officially Windows 8-certified hardware.
