BIOSPHERE RESERVES IN SOUTH EAST EUROPE AND THE MEDITERRANEAN

The MaB-Sila Biosphere Reserve: DATA
 During the 26th session of The International Coordinating Council of the MaB Program, held in Jönköping,
Sweden (10th-13th June 2014), the registration of The Sila Plateau has been approved as the 10th Italian
Biosphere Reserve in the Unesco World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
 It interests local communities in a very large area, about one third of the Calabria Region, almost 5 times the
current surface of the Sila National Park.
 Surface of 357.000 Ha.
 66 MUNICIPALITIES
 Core (7 thousand Ha);
 Buffer (60 thousand Ha);
 Transition (290 thousand Ha)
 Since its establishment, the "MaB-Sila" Biosphere Reserve has promoted activities focused on environmental protection, safeguarding
biodiversity and promoting the territory.
 In 2020 it received the City Planning Award, as part of the competition organized by the scientific journal of the National Institute of City
Planning (INU) which, since 2006, has selected the visitors’ favorite projects during the National Urbanpromo event, organized by INU and
Urbit.
 The winning project, through which the Reserve and the Sila National Park competed, concerns the preservation, monitoring,
communication and sharing of activities in the area. From the stipulations of agreements for studies and research with multiple Institutes
(like the Consortium of Associated Potato Producers and the Consortium for the Protection of Patata della Sila PGI, Unical, University of
Tuscia, Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, National Research Council, Italian Academy of Forest Sciences, Cursa, Crea) to the
promotion of the territory, achieved thanks to the #RiservaMaBSila campaign and the Sila Storytelling experiential marketing laboratory. The
project is also based on the Summer School, intended to enhance the sustainability of the Reserve’s tourist development and on the concrete
idea of sustainable agriculture developed with the Consortium of Associated Potato Producers and the Consortium for the Protection of
Patata della Sila PGI.
