Naturalism
Naturalism is the belief that
nothing exists beyond the natural
world. Instead of using
supernatural or spiritual
explanations, naturalism focuses
on explanations that come from
the laws of nature.
Naturalism, in philosophy, a theory that relates
scientific method to philosophy by affirming that
all beings and events in the universe (whatever
their inherent character may be) are natural.
Consequently, all knowledge of the universe falls
within the pale of scientific investigation.
Naturalism in a Nutshell
Nature is simply what we
have good reason to believe
that something exists.
MAJOR PHILOSOPHIES of EDUCATION_AGUILAR-LESLIE M_pptx.pdf
Is naturalism falsifiable?
How do you know there’s a
single natural world, and not
two worlds, the natural and
the supernatural?
Applied to education,
naturalism considers child as a gift of
nature with potentialities for natural
growth according to laws of nature.
The approach focuses on input,
comprehension, and meaningful
communication and puts less emphasis
on grammar, teacher monologues, direct
repetition and accuracy
What is the role of students
in Natural Approach?
“Childhood curricula looks at the child as the core of the learning
process”
To conclude, it clear that Jordanian childhood education teachers' perspectives toward the implications of
naturalism as an educational philosophy were positive either in the curriculum, aims, and activities. There
were some degrees of implications between some of the items of the different domains as indicated by the
findings. Years of teaching experience and the level of education of the participants were not distinguishing
factors in the degree of implications of naturalism as an educational philosophy throughout Jordanian
kindergarten curriculum. Based on these findings, the researchers provide some relevant recommendations.
It is important for childhood education teachers to examine their beliefs and value system since they
influence their teaching styles and their classroom interactions. Furthermore, they need to identify their
teaching orientation to become aware of its influence on their teaching and their students ’learning. We
must recognize the fact that childhood education’s teachers have their own philosophical beliefs and value
system which can influence their learning. It is also recommended that further research be conducted in the
area of teachers’ educational philosophies and their impact on the teaching-learning process. This way, we
can inform teachers of their own prejudices or lack of while teaching our generations. This also can guide
them to choose the appropriate curriculum, aims and classroom activities.
The Implications of Naturalism as an Educational
Philosophy in Jordan from the Perspectives of
Childhood Education Teachers
Idealism
In philosophy, any view that
stresses the central role of the ideal
or the spiritual in the interpretation
of experience.
What is Plato's theory of idealism?
Platonic idealism is the theory that the
substantive reality around us is only a
reflection of a higher truth. That truth, Plato
argued, is the abstraction. He believed that
ideas were more real than things.
What is the example of
idealism in education?
Idealist teacher in classroom
aims to develop students’
spiritual, mental and moral
being.

Realism
The realist approach is a form of
theory-driven evaluation developed to
strengthen the explanatory power of
evaluation studies and contribute to
evidence-based policy and practice.
What is the nature of realism?
Realism, in philosophy, the viewpoint
which accords to things which are
known or perceived an existence or
nature which is independent of
whether anyone is thinking about or
perceiving them
How will you apply realistic approach
in your class?
Is realism teacher or student-
centered?
Let’s analyze!
A. A researcher observes student habits by sitting in a library
alone and recording the study habits of students during a two
hour period.
B. Teacher A brings experience into the classroom through
guest speakers, engaging students in case studies, or field
works.
C. Teacher B trains his/her students that need further
instruction in character development, creating or
strengthening morals and value in them.
WRAP UP!
❖ The philosophies that we embrace are influenced by
the cultures we live in.
❖ Philosophy can guide practice and help you explain
and defend your educational goals.
❖ The process of developing a philosophy begins with
examining your own beliefs about teaching, learning,
and students.
❖ An analysis of educational philosophies can assist
teachers in forming their own personal, and probably
eclectic, personal philosophy.
Thank you!
Any questions?
Clarifications?
