Enterprise Java on Microsoft Azure: From Java EE to Spring, we’ve got you cov...Ed Burns
Ed Burns brings his seventeen years of server side Java experience to bear on the topic of Enterprise Java on Microsoft Azure. Before the advent of cloud infrastructure, the stack was the main thing. This gave rise to many entertaining platform wars, and even personality feuds among the principals. Spring or J2EE? Spring MVC or JSF (or Struts/Wicket/Tapestry/WebWork...)? Spring REST or JAX-RS? Spring DI or CDI? Spring Boot or MicroProfile? Single-vendor proprietary de-facto standard or multi-vendor community developed standard? Ed has seen these "wars" come and go, and even fought in some of them. While "wars" make for great conference talks, blog posts, and articles, at the end of the day creating business value is the whole point of enterprise Java. Ed contends that nowadays, the cloud vendor is the main thing, and the best cloud vendor is one that best supports "all of the above", from lift and shift of existing workloads, to lift and modernize, on through to turn-key PaaS solutions.
This session will briefly survey the history of enterprise Java to establish the need for an "all of the above" enterprise cloud platform, examine some ways enterprises can use the current offerings from Microsoft Azure, and give a peek into what's in store in the near future.

DevOpsDays Atlanta 2025 - Building 10x Development Organizations.pptxJustin Reock
Building 10x Organizations with Modern Productivity Metrics
10x developers may be a myth, but 10x organizations are very real, as proven by the influential study performed in the 1980s, ‘The Coding War Games.’
Right now, here in early 2025, we seem to be experiencing YAPP (Yet Another Productivity Philosophy), and that philosophy is converging on developer experience. It seems that with every new method we invent for the delivery of products, whether physical or virtual, we reinvent productivity philosophies to go alongside them.
But which of these approaches actually work? DORA? SPACE? DevEx? What should we invest in and create urgency behind today, so that we don’t find ourselves having the same discussion again in a decade?

Artificial Intelligence is providing benefits in many areas of work within the heritage sector, from image analysis, to ideas generation, and new research tools. However, it is more critical than ever for people, with analogue intelligence, to ensure the integrity and ethical use of AI. Including real people can improve the use of AI by identifying potential biases, cross-checking results, refining workflows, and providing contextual relevance to AI-driven results.
News about the impact of AI often paints a rosy picture. In practice, there are many potential pitfalls. This presentation discusses these issues and looks at the role of analogue intelligence and analogue interfaces in providing the best results to our audiences. How do we deal with factually incorrect results? How do we get content generated that better reflects the diversity of our communities? What roles are there for physical, in-person experiences in the digital world?

Why are Customers Choosing AHV?
Same reason they chose Nutanix!
• Simplicity of management
• Scalability and Management Availability
• Native Integration of Storage, Compute and Workload Management
• Security (STIG)
• DevOps
In 2016 virtualization should be invisible!
12. 12
Miber Inc.’s Journey to Invisible Virtualization
Background:
• Miber Inc., a healthcare device manufacturing organization is
a relatively new Nutanix Customer.
• They recently purchased Nutanix for 2 environments. The
first cluster was deployed for server workloads (running
vSphere) and the second was a dedicated environment for
their newly formed DevOps team.
• IT decided to utilize AHV in the DevOps environment to save
on vSphere licenses.
• Miber has a typical IT shop dealing with typical challenges
that exist in many organizations.
13. 13
Miber Inc.’s Journey to Invisible Virtualization
Dynamically Increase Cluster Storage
Scenario 1:
• The Nutanix Capacity Planner has indicated that more
storage will be required within the next 30 days
• Miber IT learned that they could purchase a “light compute
node” to alleviate the problem.
• They were elated to find out that it wouldn’t cost them
additional vSphere licenses.
• There is some concern about the process of adding
additional storage.
• Let’s see what that process looks like!
14. 14
Miber Inc.’s Journey to Invisible Virtualization
Tend to Needy Developer Requests
Scenario 2:
• Miber’s DevOps Nutanix Cluster has been deployed with
AHV.
• They are looking to stand up the environment and
operationalize quickly to realize the ROI they committed to
the business.
• IT is concerned that this will become a burden even though
the intention was to create a self sufficient environment.

Scenario 3:
• Miber IT has an initiative to protect mission critical workloads
but has a limited DR budget.
• There is capacity on the DevOps cluster which is in a
different location, but the cluster is running AHV.
• They are concerned that the migration and failover scenario
won’t be possible do to mixed Hypervisors.
• Nutanix has confirmed that this IS in fact passible
• IT is skeptical, but willing to give it a try

Scenario 4:
• The DevOps team has EA credits with Microsoft and would
like to utilize Azure for protecting their VMs

Scenario 5:
After experiencing the goodness of the AHV solution, Miber IT is feeling
a sense of enlightenment and would like to convert its production
Nutanix cluster off of VMware.
Miber Inc.’s Journey to Invisible Virtualization Convert
Entire vSphere Cluster to AHV
#3: Set the stage. Legacy Hypervisor Manufacturers are giving people what they are asking for – faster horses. AHV is not just a new hypervisor, it’s a core component that is integral to the re-platforming of the datacenter.
“Typically when we first mention AHV to a new Nutanix customer or prospect, the initial reaction is why? We already have a great hypervisor, and VMware is the gold standard in the datacenter. VMware has been adding features and improving the product. In fact, it is now possible to virtualize more than 80% of a companies server based workloads. We don't disagree. VMware has delivered on what their customers have been asking for. Although they thought differently early on and created something that was perhaps the most disruptive product of all time, server technology evolved as well.
The problem is, improvements can only go so far before the innovation curve slows down . Meanwhile, times are changing and business are asked to do more with less and data center environment have become immensely complex
Outside of technology, I am a bit of a history buff – and I find it so interesting how we can draw analogies to what is happening now in technology to many other pivotal points in history. For example, think about how different the outcome may have been if Henry Ford thought it would have been better to try improve how people got around rather than rethink it. Perhaps everyone would have one of these. <CLICK> Personally, I'd rather have one of these”
#4: This is a fun exercise to articulate the fact that ESX has been in existence for 15 years. Showing the IPOD helps people to relate to how long this technology has truly been around. This is also used to engage the audience early with questions like “Who still has one of these?” and “Who has been working with ESX for 15 + years?”
“So speaking of history, I'd like to take you all on a ride on the way back machine. On this trip, I want everyone to think way back to 2001. Who recognizes what's on the screen. How many folks worked in IT back in 2001? Who recognizes this? ESX 1.0! ANyone work with VMware that long ago?”
#5: Again, the point here is to show vMotion is a big disrupter and emphasize that EMC acquired shortly after vMotion was release. It also emphasizes how long this technology has been around – relating back to a well known consumer technology.
2003 was another busy year in technology. In the consumer world, WiFi started to become main stream. It was also a very important year for virtualization. Any guesses? VMware release vMotion! Who remembers the first time you saw vMotion? One more question - in 2003 what did vMotion require? So what I also like to point out is towards the end of 2003 EMC began talks to acquire VMware. That transaction was completed in 2004. The rest is history!
#6: Point to emphasize that vSphere client has been around for 10 year – as long as WiFI and AWS also started 10 years ago.
Further great technical innovation came in 2006. BluRay - arguably the last great physical medium for content distribution. It was also a very important year for data center innovation. First, when AWS hit the market - which gave birth to Public Cloud! Second, our friends at VMware released VI3 which included two new killer features and a new client.
#7: We start by showing vSphere client has not changed in 10 years, then articulate the emergence of Hyper V, AWS and Azure. Finally, we show Nutanix Acropolis connecting to all of these technologies and AHV emerging as the “built in” hypervisor. Why is it time for something new – point should be beyond hypervisor– let’s change something.
#8: The point of Nutanix Acropolis, Acropolis Hypervisor and App Mobility Fabric is not another hypervisor but a total solution made up of many components designed as best of breed – ultimately put together to deliver an application to the business
#9: Another engaging exercise to show people how the public clouds are using open source hypervisors, but most people don’t know and don’t care what they are.
#10: Again emphasize that AHV is not another hypervisor, but a component in our solution to enhance operations.
#11: Define App Mobility Fabric as preventing lock-in, giving people choice and opening incredible flexibility.
#13: Define the background of a fictitious company, and set the stage that they are dealing with real world challenges. Emphasize that they have some healthy skepticism, but are open to seeing “what’s possible”
#14: <DEMO>Log into to Prism Central (showing 2 clusters) one with AHV one with vSphere Show Capacity Runway tool and expand vSphere cluster with 6035C
(1 Minute) Add Graphics – vSphere.
#15: <DEMO> Expand vSphere cluster with 6035C (1 Minute)
#16: Service Now console makes this seem more “real” Typically IT will receive tickets for these type of requests.
<DEMO>Utilize Image Service, Deploy VMs, Clone many VMs (via ACLI or Prism Central). Customize, Power on and Console.
#17: <DEMO> Deploy AFS on AHV cluster – no need to demo AFS , but simply show deployment
#19: Deploy SSP– Get DevOps team involved – so they can see how easy – no longer need to request services from IT : Demo – Change name to what we are demoing,
#20: Nutanix is committed to providing flexibility and choice when it comes to runtime environments. From our early days, we have given our customers a choice of hypervisors to run their applications on, including ESXi, Hyper-V and the native virtualization solution, AHV
We have a set of technologies built into the Nutanix solution called the App Mobility Fabric that make it easy to move applications and data between different hypervisors and to public cloud services and back. Let’s look at a couple of examples:
Nutanix has a tool called Foundation that makes it extremely simple to install the hypervisor that you want on a Nutanix cluster. With Foundation, you can change the hypervisor in a matter of minutes
We also have a one-click hypervisor conversion capability that allows you to change the hypervisor on a Nutanix cluster (with VMs running on it) from ESXi to AHV with a single click. You don’t have to move the VMs or data out of the cluster manually – the system takes care of converting VM formats, installing paravirtualization drivers, registering VMs, converting hosts, etc. behind the scenes
Nutanix allows you to do backup and DR between two Nutanix clusters running different hypervisors (cross-hypervisor backup and DR)
We also introduced Cloud Connect, which gives you the ability to backup data from a Nutanix cluster to public cloud services (Amazon AWS or Microsoft Azure) without the need for third-party tools or external management. This entire process is built into the Nutanix solution
At the end of the day, it’s about allowing you to use the hypervisor or cloud that best meets the needs of your different environments without getting locked in
#21: <DEMO> vSphere Protection Domain linked to AHV cluster. Run Recovery Workflow
#22: Now that DevOps is used to Prism – they can do this themselves!
<DEMO> Backup AHV workloads and AHV workloads to AWS and/or Azure – Speak to Vision
#23: <Recorded Video> Convert Cluster workflow – the ultimate adoption of AHV
#24: As a solution focused organization, integration with 3rd party products is important. The full Nutanix stack including the hypervisor has been embraced by many technology manufactures and this is growing. So whether Data Protection, Application Load Balancing , End User Computing or any Microsoft Application – Nutanix is the perfect fit.
#25: Define the fact that Nutanix is re-platforming the datacenter and we are a data center transformation company. Can’t do this with legacy.
