SustainabilityleadersfromacrossAustraliaandNew Zealandwereonthe edge of theirseatslast night,as the winnersof the 2015 GreenGownAwardsAustralasiawere announcedlivefromthe spectacularwaterfrontvenue - The Pier- inGeelong,Victoria. 43 finalistsfrom22 institutionswere holdingtheirbreathasACTSpresident,LeanneDenby,andVice Presidentof Resources,CoreyPeterson,announced16winnersrepresenting11 institutionsfrom across Australasia. Guestsat the highlyengagingandfun packedevening,now intheirsixthyear,includedsustainability professionalsfromthe tertiaryeducationsectorinAustralasia,New ZealandandUK,aswell as Leadersfromthe sector,such as UniversitiesAustralia,TAFEDirectorsAustralia,Environment EducationVictoriaandthe National TertiaryEducationUnion.Conference hosts,DeakinUniversity were alsorepresentedbyProfessorLee Astheimer(DeputyVice-Chancellor,Research,andActing Vice Chancellorwhoattendedandpresentedthe three international Awards). The onlyaward to be receivedbythe hostinguniversity,DeakinUniversitywas: Highly Commendedinthe categoryof Learning,TeachingandSkills. The award teamcomprisedprincipallyof the CreatingSustainableFuturesteam: TeresaCapetola, Sue Noy,Janine McBurnie,BarbCieveska,KimberleyJamesand The HealthNature and SustainabilityTeam:RebeccaPatrick,SoniaNuttman,JustinLawsonand Claire Henderson-Wilson. The award entryincludedthe followingdescription: Creating Sustainable Futures commenced as an interdisciplinary unit on climate change, seven years later it has evolved into a process for, as well as product of, Education for Sustainability (EfS) which over 1000 students have experienced. It utilizes the EfS elements of head (thinking), heart (feeling) and hands (actions) (Sipos et al (2008) within a context of critical, futures and creative thinking. It is included in all Deakin University undergraduate sustainability majors. It has facilitated and contributed to: establishment of a student sustainable food society; short courses for health practitioners; sustainability events for local communities; sustainability workshops for secondary school students and; reinvigorated a Centre for Sustainability Research. Operating successfully for seven years, it is testimony that interdisciplinary perspectives and collaboration can be productively implemented in EfS.
