INTRODUCTION
The health of a democracy depends
on an informed electorate
(paraphrased from Thomas Jefferson)
False news, big lies, disinformation,
conspiracy theory and the like
contribute to declines in trust and
erode democracy
The meteoric ride of artificial intelligence (AI)
makes it virtually impossible for consumers to
know what is real, truthful or factual.
Social media is being used to spread all of this
around the world in a matter of seconds.
We have our work cut for us.
When will it stop?
It won’t.
Not until:
- legislation
- people demand it
- social media owners
Study of more than 1,000 people revealed
that nine out of 10 American adults fact-
check their news, and 96 percent want to
limit the spread of false information.
More than half of social media users who
share news or political posts sometimes do
so without verifying the facts.

“it turns out that the Rijksmuseum has an app that,
among other things, contains guided tours and
further information about the works on
display,”Jose Picardo writes on Medium. “As part of
their visit to the museum, the children, who minutes
earlier had admired the art and listened attentively
to explanations by expert adults, had been
instructed to complete an assignment by their
school teachers, using, among other things, the
museum’s excellent smartphone app.”

DEFINITION OF MEDIA LITERACY
“Media literacy is the ability or skill to
critically analyze news and stories reported
in the media, and be able to determine
their accuracy or credibility effectively.”

Percentage of people who say they

A. 23 %
B. 47%
C. 60%
D. 84%
the ability to find, evaluate, organize, use,
and communicate information in various
formats
an individual's ability to find, evaluate,
and communicate information using
typing or digital media platforms
Media Literacy is often used when the MSM really means:
News
"
“The American public should know that content that they read
online – especially on social media – could be foreign propaganda,
even if it appears to be coming from fellow Americans or
originating in the United States."
Office of the Director of National
Intelligence
“But at this moment, the
most egregious purveyors
of disinformation in US
politics are far right
members of the Republican
party"
- Over half of Gen Z teens get their news from social media
- 60% of 13-17 year olds are likely to believe conspiracy theories
online
- 82 percent of middle school students, despite their fluency on
social media, could not distinguish between ad-sponsored content
and a real news story.
- four in 10 high-school aged students trusted the headline above a
photo on a photo-sharing site as a fact, despite not having any
information about where the photo was taken.
-52% of the adults polled recently said they were “somewhat
confident” that they could distinguish between real news and fake
news.
Recent research indicates::
Big Problem
What’s wrong with young
people getting their news
from TikTok (or from
social media sources)?
TikTok has shown itself to be rather inhospitable to
news: It removes links that publishers could use to pull
users out of the app, it does little to label news or help
users evaluate its credibility, and unlike other apps, it’s
offered few financial incentives to news publishers
(though note a couple of exceptions).
