POETRY
For this workshop we’ll define
poetry as a condensed
expression of your thoughts or
feelings
Anything you put to paper with
intention can be poetry
#Poetry4MentalHealth
IMMERSE, EXPLORE, EXPRESS
As a group, we will immerse ourselves in 2
short films from our OLIVE Film Collection.
Together, we will explore the themes brought
up in the films through discussion.
Individually, we will express our thoughts
and feelings through writing exercises to
create poetry as a response.

Never ending problems
Problem Problems
is there ever a solution?
from what I see we are becoming
kinder
and forgiving one of
the others can cause an
issuer.
Now is there a such thing of
being to kind.
the answer is yes.
Role Model
Person you admire.
Someone with fire.
A person who stands above all
others,
For all others.
A strong person in all ways
Through all days.
A person who puts the needs of
others before their own
True strength shown
She’s a cautionary tale
of what not to do;
her being, a narrow badger’s hole
full of insects and expectation
The supposed role model
Illusion
A misleading veil, permeating
thoughts
Rejection
For I’m still and distraught
Desperation
The silence is fraught
Many people feel this way
Don’t suffer alone
Expectations
Fears
Burdens
Isolation
And Pain
You have more to gain than
to dwell in your pain
Through weakness comes
strength

● Can relate
● That imagery of drowning, being under water, so powerful. Feel for him
● Familiar feeling
● My anxiety increased as soon as i heard the mom say "don’t get left
behind".
● Hidden
● I see that alcoholism is still a big issue. which shows that he is looking
for help
● Sometimes I feel like I'm standing still, instead of moving forward as I
should be.
● In Latinx culture, alcohol use feels tricky and confusing
● Definitely relate; people often think "tough love" helps, but empathy
and learning about depression or whatever one's going through
means so much more to the one who is suffering.

to my dear mother
Mom i see that yours eyes twinkle
like little stars, up above the sky.
so far above the sky.
giving me hopes to follow this dark
dark path.
you may of made mistales but,
i am not one of them.
as my father sees it himself.
Model Son. Fear of rejection. Fear
of confrontation. Don’t want to be
chastised. Don’t want to be treated
like a child. Don’t want to be told
how to live my life. Got to do better,
got to be better. Can’t be weak.
Numb feelings. Do what you got to
do. Be tough. Be strong. Don’t
show weakness.
You wonder that maybe one day
they would understand.
Encouragement feels like an
obligation built on the backs of
the informal lies your mother has
told,
And even as you grow old and the
lies don’t matter anymore,
Your mouth tastes like iodine, like
brewing sickness.
She lied for your perfection,
Lied so her love was
unconditional
Lied so that she could smile in a
room full of persecutors just like
her.
She makes herself the victim
when she’s faced with the cruel
nature of your brokenness.
You cannot find it in yourself to
smile at her,
For she has done more damage
than can be fixed in one hundred
lifetimes.

HERE ARE OUR TWO CHARACTERS

#Poetry4MentalHealth
Why can’t men ask for mental health support?
Explore
CHAT BOX
● They would be seen as weak
● Toxic Masculinity doesn't really allow for men to be vulnerable
● They will lose their dignity
● Men are not encouraged to be in touch with their emotions and to
express them
● Society has deemed men are the backbone of the family, the
protector; when there's moments of weakness, uncertainty, they are
judged by family, friends, society as a whole. They are already a target,
regarding "toxic masculinity;" why would would they add to the pile?
#Poetry4MentalHealth
How can we expand our definitions of masculinity?
Explore
CHAT BOX
● Do away with stereotypes
● Add aspects of femininity to the definition
● Allow these conversations to be had without ego or sterotypes
● Not attributing traits that have nothing to do with sex or gender to
sex and gender. Personality, mental health, physical etc.
● Strength means crying crocodile tears in front of a room full of people
and not necessarily not caring but showing that you are brave enough
to do it. Its ok to ask for help.
● View them as an individual and not part of the patriarchy; no matter
what group we may belong to, we are all human, we are all suffering.
Relating to one another on that level could bring us together instead
of blowing us apart.
● Fess to what is wrong with masculinity and even femininity. It seems
like people hold on to these definitions with some weird nostalgia that
no one really can live up to (or ever lived up to...happily)
● Masculinity should become myth. why expand it? make it smaller to
the point that can revolve around brave, strong, intelligent.
● Just allow us all to just be who we are. Without labels.

The question
Can i be your superman
Don't be my kryptonite
instead embrace me
from who i am
allow me to reach my full potential
plant the seed and watch me grow.
but makes you are caring for me
as i am covering you from
the disasters.
Treat them like a hero
Love them with a passion
For all that he is
No matter the tears
No matter the failures
Show them that it takes a
brave person
To show his feelings
To fail and get back up
To cry when he needs to
To speak about his feelings
Be his strength
We can check in with each other to
make sure that all is well; because
often times we hide our pain so no
one else can tell. And if we ever
feel as if there is no hope in sight;
Instead of tucking it away, take out
a pen and write.
See the beauty in one and all
See we are the same
Even with different points of
view
Be glad that you came
Listen, wait your turn
You may in fact learn
Just keep an open mind
And receive the respect
you’ve earned.

  • 28. #Poetry4MentalHealth WRITING DEBRIEF How did that feel? Did you write anything that surprised you? Express
  • 30. #Poetry4MentalHealth #Poetry4MentalHealth Let’s share! Express Never ending problems Problem Problems is there ever a solution? from what I see we are becoming kinder and forgiving one of the others can cause an issuer. Now is there a such thing of being to kind. the answer is yes. Role Model Person you admire. Someone with fire. A person who stands above all others, For all others. A strong person in all ways Through all days. A person who puts the needs of others before their own True strength shown She’s a cautionary tale of what not to do; her being, a narrow badger’s hole full of insects and expectation The supposed role model Illusion A misleading veil, permeating thoughts Rejection For I’m still and distraught Desperation The silence is fraught Many people feel this way Don’t suffer alone Expectations Fears Burdens Isolation And Pain You have more to gain than to dwell in your pain Through weakness comes strength
  • 32. #Poetry4MentalHealth MIND MATTERS BY SEYI AKINLADE & JOSEF ADAMU AWI Winner, November 2019 Immerse Content Heads Up: depression, stigma, alcohol use
  • 33. #Poetry4MentalHealth HOW ARE YOU, REALLY? You are invited to share a few words in the chat to describe how you’re feeling. Immerse ● Good ● Stigmatized ● Can relate ● That imagery of drowning, being under water, so powerful. Feel for him ● Familiar feeling ● My anxiety increased as soon as i heard the mom say "don’t get left behind". ● Hidden ● I see that alcoholism is still a big issue. which shows that he is looking for help ● Sometimes I feel like I'm standing still, instead of moving forward as I should be. ● In Latinx culture, alcohol use feels tricky and confusing ● Definitely relate; people often think "tough love" helps, but empathy and learning about depression or whatever one's going through means so much more to the one who is suffering.
  • 34. #Poetry4MentalHealth EXPLORE Put yourself in the position of our main character as he sits in front of the TV at home. Explore
  • 35. #Poetry4MentalHealth Explore CHAT BOX What might keep you from returning your mother’s phone call? ● disappointment ● stigma ● She would not understand. ● Shame ● Anxiety, fear of confrontation, fear she would make it worse. ● Because she already doesn't understand; he's already spoken to her about it and her response only hurt himi. ● She won't understand ● Why expose yourself to more misunderstanding and platitudes? ● I might not call mom because I get anxious when I'm criticized and told that I do not know how to live my own life ● disappointment in life that you feel totally defeated ● Confrontation ● Criticism or self-isolation ● Mom is part of the negative loop
  • 38. #Poetry4MentalHealth WRITING DEBRIEF How did that feel? Did you write anything that surprised you? Express
  • 40. #Poetry4MentalHealth #Poetry4MentalHealth Let’s share! Immerse to my dear mother Mom i see that yours eyes twinkle like little stars, up above the sky. so far above the sky. giving me hopes to follow this dark dark path. you may of made mistales but, i am not one of them. as my father sees it himself. Model Son. Fear of rejection. Fear of confrontation. Don’t want to be chastised. Don’t want to be treated like a child. Don’t want to be told how to live my life. Got to do better, got to be better. Can’t be weak. Numb feelings. Do what you got to do. Be tough. Be strong. Don’t show weakness. You wonder that maybe one day they would understand. Encouragement feels like an obligation built on the backs of the informal lies your mother has told, And even as you grow old and the lies don’t matter anymore, Your mouth tastes like iodine, like brewing sickness. She lied for your perfection, Lied so her love was unconditional Lied so that she could smile in a room full of persecutors just like her. She makes herself the victim when she’s faced with the cruel nature of your brokenness. You cannot find it in yourself to smile at her, For she has done more damage than can be fixed in one hundred lifetimes.
  • 41. #Poetry4MentalHealth HERE ARE OUR TWO CHARACTERS FROM THE FILMS WE WATCHED
  • 42. #Poetry4MentalHealth Why can’t men ask for mental health support? Explore CHAT BOX ● They would be seen as weak ● Toxic Masculinity doesn't really allow for men to be vulnerable ● They will lose their dignity ● Men are not encouraged to be in touch with their emotions and to express them ● Society has deemed men are the backbone of the family, the protector; when there's moments of weakness, uncertainty, they are judged by family, friends, society as a whole. They are already a target, regarding "toxic masculinity;" why would would they add to the pile?
  • 43. #Poetry4MentalHealth How can we expand our definitions of masculinity? Explore CHAT BOX ● Do away with stereotypes ● Add aspects of femininity to the definition ● Allow these conversations to be had without ego or sterotypes ● Not attributing traits that have nothing to do with sex or gender to sex and gender. Personality, mental health, physical etc. ● Strength means crying crocodile tears in front of a room full of people and not necessarily not caring but showing that you are brave enough to do it. Its ok to ask for help. ● View them as an individual and not part of the patriarchy; no matter what group we may belong to, we are all human, we are all suffering. Relating to one another on that level could bring us together instead of blowing us apart. ● Fess to what is wrong with masculinity and even femininity. It seems like people hold on to these definitions with some weird nostalgia that no one really can live up to (or ever lived up to...happily) ● Masculinity should become myth. why expand it? make it smaller to the point that can revolve around brave, strong, intelligent. ● Just allow us all to just be who we are. Without labels.
  • 46. #Poetry4MentalHealth #Poetry4MentalHealth Let’s share! Immerse The question Can i be your superman Don't be my kryptonite instead embrace me from who i am allow me to reach my full potential plant the seed and watch me grow. but makes you are caring for me as i am covering you from the disasters. Treat them like a hero Love them with a passion For all that he is No matter the tears No matter the failures Show them that it takes a brave person To show his feelings To fail and get back up To cry when he needs to To speak about his feelings Be his strength We can check in with each other to make sure that all is well; because often times we hide our pain so no one else can tell. And if we ever feel as if there is no hope in sight; Instead of tucking it away, take out a pen and write. See the beauty in one and all See we are the same Even with different points of view Be glad that you came Listen, wait your turn You may in fact learn Just keep an open mind And receive the respect you’ve earned.
