This workshop highlights successful large scale, on-the-ground restoration efforts in several priority areas of the Great Lakes. Strategies will be shared for planning, financing, and articulating results from restoration projects in order to bring multiple societal benefits. Participants will brainstorm the next level of restoration impacts we would like to see from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

MGNREGA works can help address climate change through various environmental services. The livelihoods of rural poor are dependent on natural resources like land and water that are threatened by climate change. MGNREGA works like water conservation, land development, and afforestation can provide local benefits like groundwater recharge and soil fertility while also contributing to global climate change adaptation and mitigation. Over 80% of MGNREGA works are related to water, land and forestry conservation. These works can strengthen resilience of rural communities to climate change impacts and enhance carbon sequestration. MGNREGA can also help drought-proof smallholder agriculture through expanded irrigation potential and adoption of conservation technologies.

Jennifer Birchfield, Water Program Director with Save the Dunes, will update the group on several news items and initiatives. Save the Dunes in partnership with the city of Valparaiso, was recently awarded a $607,000 EPA grant to improve a large detention area located at Evans & Roosevelt in Valparaiso. The basin feeds into the Salt Creek watershed and eventually into Lake Michigan. Birchfield said more than 500 acres of developed land drains into the 2-acre Thorgren basin after a storm. That water contains pollutants, such as lawn chemicals, oil and animal feces. The grant money will spur efforts to naturalize the basin to mimic a wetland surrounding to filter pollutants. Concrete will be replaced by a meandering waterway. Turfgrass will be replaced with native plantings that have deep roots that absorb water and pollutants. Save the Dunes officials hope the Thorgren basin will become a model for other basins in the Lake Michigan watershed.

2013 HOW Conference: Climate Change Exacerbates Rain-Related Disease Risk Healthy Lakes, Healthy Lives

Climate change is exacerbating rain-related disease risk. Models project significant increases in the frequency and intensity of intense rainfall events in Wisconsin by 2055 due to climate change. More frequent and intense storms increase the risk of waterborne diseases by overwhelming aging infrastructure and increasing pathogen runoff into water sources. Studies have shown increases in acute gastrointestinal illnesses, especially in children, following heavy rainfall events. Contaminated groundwater from failing septic systems also poses a disease risk. Climate change impacts like more frequent extreme rainfall events threaten greater waterborne disease outbreaks unless infrastructure is upgraded and policies are implemented to mitigate risks.

Sharing Success: The Northeast Michigan CWMA Healthy Lakes, Healthy Lives

We use grassroots efforts to kill grass roots! This overview of the successes and challenges of establishing the Northeast Michigan Cooperative Weed Management Area (CWMA) will include topics like creating a scalable treatment program, working on public and private lands, prioritizing sites while including all landowners, and creating motivation to solve a problem that isn’t necessarily visible to often absent seasonal landowners. Ecologist Jennifer Muladore, who manages the Huron Pines Invasive Species Program and coordinates the Northeast Michigan CWMA, will lead group discussion and show visuals to help other invasive species program organizers boost their own program’s capacity for restoration success.
