Tagalog is the main language of Mindoro,
though some parts are greatly influenced by
the native Visayan and Mangyan languages.
Hanunuo language is the language spoken by
the Mangyans.

BALITAO
• Is an old Visayan folk song and dance where a man and
woman engage in a debate in song. They dance with
each other keeping time with the music, until one of
the parties sing their part is more than sang than
danced. It uses lyrics that are ideally humorous and
performed spontaneously to a preconceived theme.
ANUGON-ANUGON
REPRESANTATIVE SONGS/GENRE
DANDANSOY – Is a Visayan song that depicts the story of
a woman who goes home to payao or a farm house. The
woman tells the man she loves to follow her in case he
misses her.

PASTORES
• Is a poetic play and dance describing the story of the
shepherd’s search for the baby Jesus. Pastores de
Sibonga is one of the known Christmas plays in Visayas.
It started in the 1920’s.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF VISAYAS
• RONDALLA – is an ensemble of string instruments played
with pick. It originated in Spain and it became most popular
in Philippine folk music
• TULTUGAN – Is an indigenous term for “bamboo drum”. It
originated from Hiligaynon (Panay, Negros,) and Kiniray-a
(Antique). It is also a festival in the province and region that
promotes the town’s bamboo industry.

ISLAMIC MUSIC
• Mindanao is one of the largest islands in the Philippines.
It is surrounded by four seas namely: Sulu sea to the
west, Philippine Sea to the East, Celebes Sea to the
South, and Mindanao Sea to the North.
• This is the region that has the greatest variety of
development. It has mountains and volcanoes that are
complex in structure that attracts tourists.
ELEMENTS OF MUSIC IN MINDANAO
• Rhythm – fast, moderate, or slow in tempo.
• Timbre – head voice (light), chest speaking
voice(throaty), guttural voice.
• Melody - narrow range, moderate, wide range.
• Meter – regular and irregular meter.
• Form – syllabic and melismatic phrasing
• Texture – monophony, homophony, polyphony,
heterophony (variation on a single melody line).
• Harmony – major and minor tonality, pentatonic scale
modal.
TYPES OF VOCAL MUSIC IN
MINDANAO
• Chanting is making melodic sounds with the voice only.
There are epics in Mindanao transferred from one
generation to generation to the next through their oral
tradition, with the use of chanting.
The indigenous Philippine folklore is characterized by
sacred rituals and practices and are made more eager
and animated by the music that accompanies them. The
kind of texture that they are showing is a monophonic
texture.
EX. CHANTS
• MIMINSAD – is a dance and also chanted as
people walk before the altar. The wedding feast
is another celebration where music plays an
important role. Most of the Muslim groups play
music using small and large kettledrums as their
accompaniment to dancing.
• DARANGEN – Is an epic song which includes a
wealth of knowledge about the Maranao people
living in the Lake Lanao region of Mindanao. The
elders refer to the time-honored text in the
administration of customary law meaning: to
narrate a song in the Maranao language. It is
infrequently performed because of the present
lifestyle of the people of Mindanao.
•ULAGING – is the most important type of vocal
music. It recalls the adventure of the main
hero Agyu and his brother and sisters. This is
sung at nighttime for at least some hours, in
some cases up to several nights.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF MINDANAO
• KULINTANG – Is a counterpart of the Malaysian –
Indonesian gamelan. There are no wind or string
instruments played to accompany it. It is the principal eight
gong series used to play a variety of meaningful
compositions.
• GANIDINGAN - is a set of four large hanging gongs which is
played as part of the kulintang ensemble of Maguindanao.
• Agung – is one or two suspended gongs.
• Dabakan – is a single-headed Philippine drum that looks like
a goblet used by the Maranaos.
• Babandil – is a single, narrow- rimmed Philippine gong used
as the timekeeper of the Maguindanao kulintang ensemble.
BAMBOO INSTRUMENTS OF MINDANAO
• KUBING – is made of bamboo. It is held horizontally with the
bamboo tongue in front of the opened mouth. It can be played
in solo or in an ensemble (aerophone).
• SULING – is also called the ring flute. It is the smallest bamboo
flute of Maguindanao. The sound is produced when the air
passes through the hole found at the bottom of the instrument
while the pitch is controlled through the five finger holes at the
top and one finger located at the bottom.
• PALENDAG – is a lip-valley flute and one of the most
common aerophones of the Maguindanaons.
• KAGUL – is a Maguindanao bamboo scrapper gong or
slit drum with a jagged edge on one side.

• GADDING – Drums.
• TUNGALLAN – Large gongs.
• DUWAHAN – a set of two paired gongs.
NON-ISLAMIC MUSIC
WHAT IS LUMAD?
• Lumad is a Visayan word for “native” or “indigenous”.
• It refers to the non-Christian and non-Muslim ethnic groups
of Mindanao.
• The music of Lumad includes a wide repertoire of sounds
performed for various occasions.
• They also make use of a general array of musical
instruments that includes agong.

perform different songs from different occasions and

• It is one of t he tribes from the provinces of Davao del Norte
and Compostela Valley. Their musical forms include saliada
that is similar to ballad and bayok on or songs of love and
adventure.

The elders refer to the time-honored text in the administration of customary law meaning: to narrate a song in the Maranao language. It is infrequently performed because of the present lifestyle of the people of Mindanao.
  • 57. •ULAGING – is the most important type of vocal music. It recalls the adventure of the main hero Agyu and his brother and sisters. This is sung at nighttime for at least some hours, in some cases up to several nights.
  • 58. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF MINDANAO • KULINTANG – Is a counterpart of the Malaysian – Indonesian gamelan. There are no wind or string instruments played to accompany it. It is the principal eight gong series used to play a variety of meaningful compositions.
  • 59. • GANIDINGAN - is a set of four large hanging gongs which is played as part of the kulintang ensemble of Maguindanao. • Agung – is one or two suspended gongs. • Dabakan – is a single-headed Philippine drum that looks like a goblet used by the Maranaos. • Babandil – is a single, narrow- rimmed Philippine gong used as the timekeeper of the Maguindanao kulintang ensemble.
  • 60. BAMBOO INSTRUMENTS OF MINDANAO • KUBING – is made of bamboo. It is held horizontally with the bamboo tongue in front of the opened mouth. It can be played in solo or in an ensemble (aerophone). • SULING – is also called the ring flute. It is the smallest bamboo flute of Maguindanao. The sound is produced when the air passes through the hole found at the bottom of the instrument while the pitch is controlled through the five finger holes at the top and one finger located at the bottom.
  • 61. • PALENDAG – is a lip-valley flute and one of the most common aerophones of the Maguindanaons. • KAGUL – is a Maguindanao bamboo scrapper gong or slit drum with a jagged edge on one side.
