MySQL uses different storage engines to store, retrieve and index data. The major storage engines are MyISAM, InnoDB, MEMORY, and ARCHIVE. MyISAM uses table-level locking and supports full-text searching but not transactions. InnoDB supports transactions, row-level locking and foreign keys but with more overhead than MyISAM. MEMORY stores data in memory for very fast access but data is lost on server restart. ARCHIVE is for read-only tables to improve performance and reduce storage requirements.

It is the perfect tool for small 3-20 machine MySQL clusters to gain high availability and high performance. It stands for high availability because the fault of replica don't stop the cluster. Failed nodes can rejoin the cluster and new nodes can be added in a fully automatic way - no DBA intervention required. Its high performance because multiple masters process writes, not just one like with MySQL Replication. Running applications on it is simple: no read-write splitting, no fiddling with eventual consistency and stale data. The cluster offers strong consistency (generalized snapshot isolation). It is based on Group Communication principles, hence the name.

It is critical for Alluxio to be able to store and serve the metadata of all files and directories from all mounted external storage both at scale and at speed. This talk shares our design, implementation, and optimization of Alluxio metadata service (master node) to address the scalability challenges. Particularly, we will focus on how to apply and combine techniques including tiered metadata storage (based on off-heap KV store RocksDB), fine-grained file system inode tree locking scheme, embedded state-replicate machine (based on RAFT), exploration and performance tuning in the correct RPC frameworks (thrift vs gRPC) and etc. As a result of the combined above techniques, Alluxio 2.0 is able to store at least 1 billion files with a significantly reduced memory requirement, serving 3000 workers and 30000 clients concurrently. What if you were asked to support a database platform that you had never worked with before? First you would probably say no, but after you lost that fight, then what? That is exactly how I came to support MySQL. Over the last year my team has worked to learn MySQL, architect a production environment, and figure out how to support it alongside our other platforms (Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle). Along the way, I have also come to appreciate the unique offering of this platform and see it as an important part of our environment going forward. To make things even more challenging, our first MySQL databases were the backend for a critical, web based application that needed to be highly available across multiple data centers. This meant that we did not have the luxury of standing up a simpler environment to start with and building confidence there. Our final architecture ended up using a five node Percona XtraDB Cluster spread across three data centers. This session will focus on lessons learned along the way, as well as challenges related to supporting more than one database platforms. It should be interesting to anyone who is new to MySQL, anyone who is being asked to support more than one database platform, or anyone who wants to see how an outsider views the platform.
