Film title: Tight Jeans Duration: 8mins 41 seconds
Micro Features -Describekey features and explain what meaning is created: Macro Features - Explain whatthe micro elements suggest about:
Mise en scene (e.g. setting, costume, performance, colour, props and proxemics.)
Tight jeans captures its environment very well from the setting to the
performances. the setting of a wall in estate in London works very well
as this can be somewhere where people may just sit and talk. the
costumes also fit very well with the narrative as they eventually talk
about tight clothing and are wearing baggy, jeans and baggy hoodies,
wearing the exact opposite. they are also wearing clothes that would be
common to live in these areas and parts of London such as their shoes.
the actor’s performances are convincing in making it seem like they are
from that environment because of their use of accent and slang. the
bright colours they are wearing contrast from the dull colours of the
streets and houses around them. as they all sit on the wall together, we
know them to be friends straight away. the character Tyrone being so far
away and high up and shouting at them also is a use of proxemics to
show that he is above them.
Genre (What are the key themes? Iconography?)
Tight jeans is under the genre of comedy and showcases this
throughout. the use of long awkward shot durationand close ups of
reactions to create humour. it has a simple narrative and just has
characters sitting on a wall and conversing. it creates realism by using
establishing shots with real people in them going about their lives
and realistic portrayals of the environment.
Camerawork (e.g. shot types, angles, movement, composition, lightingand depth of
field)
The camera work for this short filmis simple and effective. mainly using
a medium tracking shot of them on the wall all in the shot at once,
allowing us to see their reactions to what each other are saying as it is
dialogue heavy. the panning of the camera from the guy walking to his
jeans sets up the talk about jeans they have, the audience also know
that they are about to start talking about his jeans by the shot of the
character in the red hoodie staring. the shot of the jeans is almost like
Narrative (Whatevents are shown? Are there any conflicts/oppositions? Do you
get a sense of the full film’s beginning-middle-end?)
We are introduced to our main characters sitting on a wall waiting for
their friend. in their wait and boredom, the see a guy walk past with
tight jeans and spiral off into a conversation about how people can
wear tight jeans and spirals out of control, not too long after. this joke
of a man walking by but this time has a tight t-shirt and the
conversation is soon to spiral off again. the guy with the tight jeans
brings us into our main conflict in the film. the ending brings the film
full circle and is a comedic way to end the film.
his eyes following the guy walking. Close ups are also used for dramatic
statements and focusing on specific character reactions.
Editing (Paceand rhythm? Motivation for the transition? Creatingrelationships? )
the film is quite slow paced which is often part of the comedy. longer
shot duration when they sit on the wall at the beginning before the
character in red says “we should just go”. these longer shots are used to
show their boredom and to create humour. The establishing shots at the
beginning let us know the sort of people in the setting we are being
introduced to. we get an idea of the culture of the area.
Representation (Howare characters, places or events represented?)
the characters in the film are represented as all quite ignorant and
goofy just talking on things that they say they've heard but they also
seem very immature. the settings are represented as real by the real
time lapsed footage used at the beginning for establishing shots. the
representation of real urban areas in London is backed by these
characters colloquialisms and style.
Sound (Whatdiegetic and non-diegetic sounds areused? Mood? Key dialogue?)
the non-diegetic sound isnt used much only briefly for the establishing
shots at the beginning further supporting the identity of the setting as
the music is an urban London sounding track. the diegetic sound is the
most important part of the filmas the dialogue is the focus of the short
film as these characters converse between each other. the dialogue is
comedic but also shows the characters personalities
Audience (Whoisthe targetaudience andhowisthisevident?)
the target audience would be young adults evidenced by the style of
comedy. the comedy is dialogue heavy and is based around race and
sex so isn’t aimed at a younger audience and could possibly be too
shocking for a older audience but may also be too immature for an
older audience. it can also be more specially foran audience that are
from a urban environment as they might relate to the group of boys
sitting on the wall.
Credits and titles (Any text elements, don’t forget idents and releaseinfo)
the fonts used for the opening credits fits the urban setting of the film.
Spectatorship (Emotional response? Preferred and alternativereadings?)
the audience would feel amused by the characters because of their
talks of nonsense and how they talk to each other, the sudden
revelations that they come to also would add to the humour for the
audience. however, an alternative reading could be that what the boys
are saying is offensive and that it isn’t funny.
