• #32: …A new device has connected to your network and this device has a vulnerability, Your vulnerability scanner identifies this, and inventories the device. Now, the good news is, you have a patch for this vulnerability. Unfortunately, the patch system uses a different device inventory than the vulnerability scanner. While other devices on your network are protected, this one remains vulnerable. [ BUILD ] Let’s look at the same scenario with Ivanti’s integrated solution. The new device is discovered, the vulnerability is detected and the patch is issued appropriately. In this case, both the device and valuable company information is protected. Now, this example is based on a real event. Simple mistakes as illustrated on the left side, led to one of the largest attacks of the last decade. [ BUILD ] In that case, it resulted in $110 million dollars in damage. --------- Full story on this scenario: Security Example…   If you dig into one of the largest attacks in the last decade what you will find is that nearly $110M in damages were caused by some pretty simple mistakes.    A device that was added to the network was identified by the vulnerability scanner that was installed, however it did not complete a scan, but did add the device to the list of known devices.  The patch system relied on an Active Directory and an internal database of devices to determine which devices to patch.  The vulnerability scanners inventory was not considered or leveraged.  This device was compromised by a simple phishing attack, which installed and executed a password grabber, which should have never been able to execute had a proper trusted ownership model been in place, that prevents unauth executables from running (Ivanti has trusted ownership to make this easy).  The executable was able to install this password grabber bypassing local security because of two things, first it exploited a OS vulnerability that was left unpatched, second the user had local admin rights, allowing it to execute.  This example is far to common.  Siloed security solutions, overlapping security capabilities and failure to address the simple fixes (patch / Admin access, etc) leads to massive exploit.   Failure to prevent unauthorized executables from launching on company / contractor devices.   IT has too many tools with overlapping capabilities that knowing which tool to look at for which data is confusing and leads to finger pointing. Take for example, what system do you trust as your source of truth when it comes to devices that are on or have access to your network?  AD? Network Scanner? Which one is the most accurate? Over 80% of all security issues can be prevented with proper patching/updating. – But if you don’t know what systems you have, how can you claim victory over patching “100%” your devices? If your Patch Management system relies on inventory from say, Active Directory, but doesn’t also take into consideration the inventory from your asset management solution, your vendors, your purchase records, your vulnerability scanner, etc you are not likely getting the full picture on what devices are on your network.   Likewise if your Patch solution can’t speak to your endpoint management solution to identify what software is installed, or who has rouge admin rights, then your patch and other security solutions might miss correcting those issues.
