Three rivals claimed the English throne after the death of King Edward in 1066: Duke William of Normandy, King Harold of England, and King Harald Hardrada of Norway. Hardrada invaded Northern England with Tostig's aid and defeated an English force, but was then killed by Harold's army at Stamford Bridge. Duke William then invaded England and defeated Harold's forces at the Battle of Hastings on October 14th, where Harold was killed. William was subsequently crowned King of England on Christmas Day 1066.
