• Counseling is giving professional advice to
individual to help resolve personal,
occupational, psychological or other problems.
Who is Counselor?
• Counselor: someone who is trained to listen
to people and give them advice or solution to
their problems.
Types of Counseling
• Marriage and family counseling.
• Guidance and career counseling.
• Rehabilitation counseling.
• Mental health counseling.
• Substance abuse counseling.
• Educational Counseling.
• Nutritional Counseling.
Purpose of Counseling
• Counseling is to help people use their existing
problem-solving skills in meaningful way.
• Counselor provides an opportunity and platform
to the person to describe their feelings and
problems for themselves to find solutions.
• Counselors can’t ‘fix’ other people’s problems.

Nutrition Counseling
• Nutrition counseling is an ongoing process as
require change in strategy in various
circumstances.
• Focus on an individual to assess his or her
usual dietary intake and identify areas where
change is needed.
Essentials of Nutritional Counseling
• Information gathering during nutrition screening leads to
setting goals for nutrition education and counseling
sessions.
• Providing evidence based information around nutrition
and its effects on one’s different aspects of health-
physical, emotional and cognitive
• Providing educational materials that reinforce messages
about healthy eating and dispel various myths.
Motivation is Important
• No counseling is effective until the counselor
works on Motivation
• Assess motivation and develop strategy to keep
that going
• Identify the best course of action to facilitate
dietary change.
• Reinforce commitment and continue working on
changes and new positive behaviors.
