Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched 182 drinking water supply projects costing 157 crores rupees aimed at providing drinking water access to over 6 lakh people across 74 urban local bodies. He also launched six new water testing laboratories in Bhubaneswar, Puri, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Cuttack, and Baripada to allow for local water quality monitoring and testing within three hours, rather than sending samples to Pune. There is plan to establish two more water testing laboratories in Berhampur and Balasore soon. • A senior official said that, earlier when there was a situation of outbreak of water borne diseases officials used sent the water samples to the National Institute of Virology, Pune for detection of bacteria and virus because of lack of laboratory in state. But, now thanks to this water testing laboratories, it is possible to get result within three hours.
