This subset is enough for most infrastructure owners, and in exchange OpenNebula let’s you manage a cloud infrastructure without an army of system administrators. Because it is completely hypervisor agnostic, fully supports VMware, and is easy to install, maintain and use within existing VMware environments, OpenNebula is widely used as an open alternative to VMware vCloud at significantly lower costs. Some of our users also see OpenNebula as a migration tool that allows them to perform a smooth transition from VMware to more open hypervisor alternatives like KVM. In other words OpenNebula leverages existing VMware infrastructure, protecting IT investments, and at the same time avoids future vendor lock-in, strengthening the negotiating position of the enterprise.

It provides a centralized authentication and authorization information and it also stores user data information such as user names, groups, hosts and many different objects to manage the security aspects of a network of computers. FreeIPA uses different technologies, but the core of the authentication system is based on MIT Kerberos technology. Thanks to this technology the authentication works on the basis of tickets to allow users or nodes communicating over a non-secure network to prove their identity to get access to different services. In this talk we will show how it is possible to integrate Sunstone authentication with the FreeIPA SSO thanks to the new Sunstone remote authentication plugin provided by OpenNebula. We will describe how to setup Sunstone in an easy way to include Kerberos authentication using Apache and Phusion Passenger module. This configuration approach also changes the security mechanism used by libvirt to establish the connection between hypervisors. We will explain how it is possible, using the host keytabs generated by FreeIPA, to improve the security between the hypervisors when we have to migrate virtual machines in an insecure network.

In recent years, the large scale cyber attack via the connection of BotNet has become a thorny issue of Global information security. Taiwan is always the main target of international hackers due to the high dense of information devices and computers in campuses are always the favorite of hackers. To help tackling such an issue, the Ezilla, which is considered as a private Cloud toolkit ( integrated with OpenNebula), has been implemented by the CyberSecurity research team in the National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC), Taiwan. Through the Ezilla which leverages OpenNebula and CyberSecuirty techniques, Cloud users can easily customize and configure a specified Cloud security training environment. It is an extremely lightweight approach helping users to access virtual computing resources. The main feature of this project is simplifying the utilization of Clouds. Our goal is to make Cloud security scientists or users painlessly to run their own CyberSecurity jobs on Cloud platforms, including Cyber Defense Exercise, Malware Knowledge Base, etc.. Based on the proposed CyberSecurity Exercise Platform, we also develop new functions which are private Cloud information security training service, Captur the Flags (CTF) competition service, and virtual networking service for enterprise.

OpenNebulaconf2017US: Paying down technical debt with "one" dollar bills by ...OpenNebula Project In addition to providing bare-metal access to large amounts of compute FAS Research Computing (FASRC) at Harvard also builds and fully maintains custom virtual machines tailored to faculty and researchers needs including lab websites, portals, databases, project development environments, and more both locally and on public clouds. Recently FASRC converted its internal VM infrastructure from a completely home-made KVM cluster to a more robust and reliable system powered by OpenNebula and Ceph configured with public cloud integration. Over the years as the number of VMs grew our home-made solution started to show signs of wear and tear with respect to scheduling, provisioning, management, inventory, and performance. Our new deployment improves on all of these areas and provides APIs and features that both help us serve clients more efficiently and improve our internal processes for testing new system configurations and dynamically spinning up resources for continous integration and deployment. Our new VM infrastructure deployment is fully automated via puppet and has been used to provision a multi-datacenter, fault-tolerant, VM infrastructure with a multi-tiered back-up system and robust VM and virtual disk monitoring. We will describe our internal system architecture and deployment, challenges we faced, and innovations we made along the way while deploying OpenNebula and Ceph. We will also discuss a new client-facing OpenNebula cloud deployment we’re currently beta testing with select users where users have full control over the creation and configuration of their VMs on FASRC compute resources via the OpenNebula dashboard and APIs.

OpenNebula Conf 2014: CentOS, QA an OpenNebula - Christoph GaluschkaNETWAYS CentOS, the Community Enterprise OS, uses Opennebula as virtualization plattform for its automated QA-process. The opennebula setup consists of 3 nodes, all running CentOS-6, who handle the following tasks:
– sunstone as cloud controller
– local mirror/DNS-Server/http-Server for the VMs to pull in packages
– one VM to run a jenkins instance to launch the various tests (ci.de.centos.org)
– nginx on the cloud controller to forward http traffic to the jenkins VM
A public git repository (http://www.gitorious.org/testautomation) is used to allow whoever wants to contribute to pull the current test suite – t_functional, a series of bash scripts used to do funtional tests of various applications, binaries, configuration files and Trademark issues. As new tests are added to the repo via personal clones and merge requests, those tests first need to complete a test run via jenkins. Each test run currently consists of 4 VMs (one for each arch for C5 and C6 – C7 to come), which run the complete test suite. All VMs used for theses tests are instantiated and torn down on demand, whenever the call to testrun a personal clone is issued (via IRC).
Once completed successfully, the request is merged into the main repo. The jenkins node monitors this repository and which automatically triggers another complete test run.
Besides these triggered test runs, the test suite is automatically triggered daily to run. This is used to verify functionality of published updates – a handfull of failty updates have allready been discovered this way.
Besides t_functional, the Linux Test Project Suite of tests is also run on a daily basis, also to verify functionality of the OS and all updates.
The third setup is used to test the available and functional integrity of published docker images for CentOS.
All these tests are later – during the QA-phase of a point release – used to verify functionality of new packages inside the CentOS QA-Setup.

OpenNebulaConf 2013 - How Can OpenNebula Fit Your Needs: A European Project F...OpenNebula Project BonFIRE is an european project which aims at providing a ”multi-site cloud facility for applications, services and systems research and experimentation”. Grouping different research cloud providers behind a common set of tools, APIs and services, it enables users to run their experiment against a heterogeneous set of infrastructure, hypervisors, networks, etc …
BonFIRE, and thus the (OpenNebula) testbeds, provide a relatively small set of images used to boot VMs. However, the experimental nature of BonFIRE projects results in a big ”turnover” of running VMs. Lot of VMs are used for a time period between a few hours and a few days, and an experiment startup can trigger deployment of many VMs at same time on a small set of OpenNebula workers, which does not correspond to usual Cloud workflow.
Default OpenNebula is not optimized for such usecase (small amount of worker nodes, high VMs turnover). However, thanks to its ability to be easily modified at each level of a Cloud deployment workflow, OpenNebula has been tuned to make it fit better with BonFIRE deployment process. This presentation will explain how to change OpenNebula TM and VMM to improve the parrallel deployment of many VMs in a short amount of time, reducing time needed to deploy an experiment to its lowest without lot of expensive hardware.

OpenNebulaconf2017US: Paying down technical debt with "one" dollar bills by ...OpenNebula Project In addition to providing bare-metal access to large amounts of compute FAS Research Computing (FASRC) at Harvard also builds and fully maintains custom virtual machines tailored to faculty and researchers needs including lab websites, portals, databases, project development environments, and more both locally and on public clouds. Recently FASRC converted its internal VM infrastructure from a completely home-made KVM cluster to a more robust and reliable system powered by OpenNebula and Ceph configured with public cloud integration. Over the years as the number of VMs grew our home-made solution started to show signs of wear and tear with respect to scheduling, provisioning, management, inventory, and performance. Our new deployment improves on all of these areas and provides APIs and features that both help us serve clients more efficiently and improve our internal processes for testing new system configurations and dynamically spinning up resources for continous integration and deployment. Our new VM infrastructure deployment is fully automated via puppet and has been used to provision a multi-datacenter, fault-tolerant, VM infrastructure with a multi-tiered back-up system and robust VM and virtual disk monitoring. We will describe our internal system architecture and deployment, challenges we faced, and innovations we made along the way while deploying OpenNebula and Ceph. We will also discuss a new client-facing OpenNebula cloud deployment we’re currently beta testing with select users where users have full control over the creation and configuration of their VMs on FASRC compute resources via the OpenNebula dashboard and APIs.

OpenNebula Conf 2014: CentOS, QA an OpenNebula - Christoph GaluschkaNETWAYS CentOS, the Community Enterprise OS, uses Opennebula as virtualization plattform for its automated QA-process. The opennebula setup consists of 3 nodes, all running CentOS-6, who handle the following tasks:
– sunstone as cloud controller
– local mirror/DNS-Server/http-Server for the VMs to pull in packages
– one VM to run a jenkins instance to launch the various tests (ci.de.centos.org)
– nginx on the cloud controller to forward http traffic to the jenkins VM
A public git repository (http://www.gitorious.org/testautomation) is used to allow whoever wants to contribute to pull the current test suite – t_functional, a series of bash scripts used to do funtional tests of various applications, binaries, configuration files and Trademark issues. As new tests are added to the repo via personal clones and merge requests, those tests first need to complete a test run via jenkins. Each test run currently consists of 4 VMs (one for each arch for C5 and C6 – C7 to come), which run the complete test suite. All VMs used for theses tests are instantiated and torn down on demand, whenever the call to testrun a personal clone is issued (via IRC).
Once completed successfully, the request is merged into the main repo. The jenkins node monitors this repository and which automatically triggers another complete test run.
Besides these triggered test runs, the test suite is automatically triggered daily to run. This is used to verify functionality of published updates – a handfull of failty updates have allready been discovered this way.
Besides t_functional, the Linux Test Project Suite of tests is also run on a daily basis, also to verify functionality of the OS and all updates.
The third setup is used to test the available and functional integrity of published docker images for CentOS.
All these tests are later – during the QA-phase of a point release – used to verify functionality of new packages inside the CentOS QA-Setup.

BonFIRE, and thus the (OpenNebula) testbeds, provide a relatively small set of images used to boot VMs. However, the experimental nature of BonFIRE projects results in a big ”turnover” of running VMs. Lot of VMs are used for a time period between a few hours and a few days, and an experiment startup can trigger deployment of many VMs at same time on a small set of OpenNebula workers, which does not correspond to usual Cloud workflow.
Default OpenNebula is not optimized for such usecase (small amount of worker nodes, high VMs turnover). However, thanks to its ability to be easily modified at each level of a Cloud deployment workflow, OpenNebula has been tuned to make it fit better with BonFIRE deployment process. This presentation will explain how to change OpenNebula TM and VMM to improve the parrallel deployment of many VMs in a short amount of time, reducing time needed to deploy an experiment to its lowest without lot of expensive hardware.

This is an effective way of partitioning a Linux machine into multiple isolated Linux containers. All containers are running on top of one single Linux kernel, which results in excellent density, performance and manageability. The talk gives an overall description of OpenVZ building blocks, such as namespaces, cgroups and various resource controllers. A few features, notably live migration and virtual swap, are described in greater details. Results of some performance measurements against VMware, Xen and KVM are given. Finally, we will provide a status update on merging bits and pieces of OpenVZ kernel to upstream Linux kernel, and share our plans for the future.

Are containers the answer? They may be able to solve many of the current problems, but they also introduce a new set of issues and ignore important lessons from the evolution of distribution-level packaging.

Building a 10x More Efficient Edge PlatformScyllaDB Painful cold boots, terrible auto-scale times, minutes-long waits for compute nodes to be up: these are standard headaches that cloud engineers have to deal with, and work-around, on a daily basis. Much of this stems from the fact that cloud infrastructure relies on technology that was never intended to be reactive in millisecond scales, or at least within the round-trip time of a user request.
In this talk, Felipe will show how building an edge platform based on technology *intended* to be fast and reactive can lead to substantial gains in both the efficiency of running the platform and the user experience when using it. First, Felipe will demonstrate how leveraging unikernels built with the Unikraft
Linux Foundation project can lead to (cold) boot times of as little as 2 ms. This, coupled with a fast VMM (FireCracker), and the fact that the images consume little memory (a few MBs) means that 10-50K of them can be run on a single, inexpensive server. Even better: fast suspend/resume times mean that instances can be suspended when idle, and then resumed just-in-time, as the next request comes in — all transparent to the user.
Felipe will show extensive benchmarks (cold boot times, latency, throughput, memory consumption, etc.) from such technology to give a taste of what future cloud platforms could (and should) look like. Felipe will wrap up the talk by showing how Unikraft integrates with the wider tooling ecosystem (e.g., Kubernetes).

At the same time, the number of security threats on Internet and intranet networks is constantly increasing, and the testing and experimentation of cyber defense solutions require the availability of separate, test environments that best reflect the complexity of a real system. Such environments support the deployment and monitoring of complex mission-driven network scenarios, and cyber security training activities, thus enabling enterprises to study cyber defense strategies and allowing security researchers to evaluate their algorithms at scale.
The main objective is delivering to researchers and practitioners an overview of the technological means and the practical steps to setup a private cloud platform based on OpenNebula for the creation and management of virtual environments that support cyber-security activities of training and testing, as well as an overview of its possible applications in the cyber security domain.

Exceptional Behaviors: How Frequently Are They Tested? (AST 2025)Andre Hora Exceptions allow developers to handle error cases expected to occur infrequently. Ideally, good test suites should test both normal and exceptional behaviors to catch more bugs and avoid regressions. While current research analyzes exceptions that propagate to tests, it does not explore other exceptions that do not reach the tests. In this paper, we provide an empirical study to explore how frequently exceptional behaviors are tested in real-world systems. We consider both exceptions that propagate to tests and the ones that do not reach the tests. For this purpose, we run an instrumented version of test suites, monitor their execution, and collect information about the exceptions raised at runtime. We analyze the test suites of 25 Python systems, covering 5,372 executed methods, 17.9M calls, and 1.4M raised exceptions. We find that 21.4% of the executed methods do raise exceptions at runtime. In methods that raise exceptions, on the median, 1 in 10 calls exercise exceptional behaviors. Close to 80% of the methods that raise exceptions do so infrequently, but about 20% raise exceptions more frequently. Finally, we provide implications for researchers and practitioners. We suggest developing novel tools to support exercising exceptional behaviors and refactoring expensive try/except blocks. We also call attention to the fact that exception-raising behaviors are not necessarily “abnormal” or rare.

What Do Contribution Guidelines Say About Software Testing? (MSR 2025)Andre Hora Software testing plays a crucial role in the contribution process of open-source projects. For example, contributions introducing new features are expected to include tests, and contributions with tests are more likely to be accepted. Although most real-world projects require contributors to write tests, the specific testing practices communicated to contributors remain unclear. In this paper, we present an empirical study to understand better how software testing is approached in contribution guidelines. We analyze the guidelines of 200 Python and JavaScript open-source software projects. We find that 78% of the projects include some form of test documentation for contributors. Test documentation is located in multiple sources, including CONTRIBUTING files (58%), external documentation (24%), and README files (8%). Furthermore, test documentation commonly explains how to run tests (83.5%), but less often provides guidance on how to write tests (37%). It frequently covers unit tests (71%), but rarely addresses integration (20.5%) and end-to-end tests (15.5%). Other key testing aspects are also less frequently discussed: test coverage (25.5%) and mocking (9.5%). We conclude by discussing implications and future research.

Overall, pytest provides some advantages, including simpler assertion, reuse of fixtures, and interoperability. Due to such benefits, multiple projects in the Python ecosystem have migrated from unittest to pytest. To facilitate the migration, pytest can also run unittest tests, thus, the migration can happen gradually over time. However, the migration can be timeconsuming and take a long time to conclude. In this context, projects would benefit from automated solutions to support the migration process. In this paper, we propose TestMigrationsInPy, a dataset of test migrations from unittest to pytest. TestMigrationsInPy contains 923 real-world migrations performed by developers. Future research proposing novel solutions to migrate frameworks in Python can rely on TestMigrationsInPy as a ground truth. Moreover, as TestMigrationsInPy includes information about the migration type (e.g., changes in assertions or fixtures), our dataset enables novel solutions to be verified effectively, for instance, from simpler assertion migrations to more complex fixture migrations.
