What should I do now?! JCS for WebLogic AdminsSimon Haslam
The Java Cloud Service offers all the power of WebLogic but runs as a managed service in the Oracle Cloud. Does this mean your job as a WebLogic Administrator will disappear? No, far from it - you'll be able to put your skills to far more valuable use!
Instead of worrying about how much hardware you need, tracking down patches, or just keeping the systems running, with JCS, your focus will be different: liaising with your development teams to deploy new versions of applications safely into production, shaking out and fixing performance issues, scheduling patching and planning for future growth while maintaining consistent service levels - all tasks of high value to your users.
This is an administrator's view of JCS and how it can work for you.

During the second half of 2016, IBM built a state of the art Hadoop cluster with the aim of running massive scale workloads. The amount of data available to derive insights continues to grow exponentially in this increasingly connected era, resulting in larger and larger data lakes year after year. SQL remains one of the most commonly used languages used to perform such analysis, but how do today’s SQL-over-Hadoop engines stack up to real BIG data? To find out, we decided to run a derivative of the popular TPC-DS benchmark using a 100 TB dataset, which stresses both the performance and SQL support of data warehousing solutions! Over the course of the project, we encountered a number of challenges such as poor query execution plans, uneven distribution of work, out of memory errors, and more. Join this session to learn how we tackled such challenges and the type of tuning that was required to the various layers in the Hadoop stack (including HDFS, YARN, and Spark) to run SQL-on-Hadoop engines such as Spark SQL 2.0 and IBM Big SQL at scale!

It focuses on how this solution addresses the challenges of deploying complex applications on OpenStack in a simple and automated way.
This document discusses how to manage SOA projects to deliver business value. It identifies typical pitfalls such as overpromising on technology capabilities or focusing too much on technical requirements rather than business requirements. It emphasizes that managing projects from the earliest stages is key to delivering expected business value. It also outlines different adoption strategies and roles involved, including enterprise architects, IT project managers, and business managers. The roles each play a part in governance and decision making.
I had the opportunity to attend Workday's yearly analyst summit, held at the Silverado Resort in Napa Valley, from April 20th - 22nd 2025. Very well attended with ERP and HCM analysts - as well a large portion of Workday executives. It is good to see Workday showing up with a massive audience to listen to analyst feedback. It was the first analyst presentation of the new Chief Commercial Officer, Rob Enslin and new President Produt and Technology Gerrit Kazmaier. They were mainly in listening mode, but identified (correctly) 'speed' as the #1 priority of things to change at Workday.
Workday has addressed pitfalls in its 2024 approach for AI and for the better: Running in the publich cloud, training on customer data, being close to real time as possible. With 1600 customers in the public cloud, Workday has made progress here as well - but has also a proven architecture - courtsey of Workday Extend in place - to move data and models back and forward. The other key takeaway is how important it is for Workday to partner - via Extend. This is in synch with one year ago with the 'Power of 3' strategy was unveiled. On the payroll side the partner approach has shown progress, and with the Payrll Control Center Workday has a modern payroll management solution in place - that now will have to see wider customer adoption and 'battle' testing. No surrprise a lot of traction in the install base for VNDLY - the gig economy is happening. No major UX updates on the horizon - which may also be good as customers and workday are settling on good level of UX. Overall the summit felt a little like someone left the parking break on - in contrast to previous years. Which is understandable with the leadership changes at the top of both business and product organization. From the changes that were communicated and can be educately guesses - it is all changes into the right direction into a more agile, faster and more modern / appropriate for AI future architecture of Worday applications.
What are you expecting / seeing happening at Workday? Feel free to share!
Event Report - Google Cloud Next 2025 - Google Cloud completes and leadsHolger Mueller
I had the opportunity to attend Google Cloud Next, held in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas from April 8th till 11th 2025. Google Cloud shows an impressive advance on infrastrucure and platform side. Google Cloud builds out its positon as leader for AI powered Next Generation Applications. Google makes agent creation easier, brings them to on premises with GDC, partners with Nvidia for GPUs on premises. Cloud WAN opens the Google Network, another differentiator. On the PaaS side, AlloyDB gains capabilties and is available via 3rd party on other clouds as well. Firestore gets MongoDB compatibility, Oracle @Google Cloud shows traction, and developers get access for Gemini across Firebase Studio.
SAP held its launch of SAP Busines Data Cloud (SAP BDC) on February 13th 2025 in New York city. It parners with Databricks to create a data lake / lakehouse as the foundation of it analytical and AI efforts. In a nutshell - it is the biggest tech innovation that SAP has launched in this side of the millenium. - as it gives its customers, its partners and SAP itself a new lease on life.
What is your take? Important? Not so? Please share!

- ‘Uber’ Sagemaker - Suites always win
- Fall of the Lakehouses – ubiquous
- Aurora DSQL – there’s still fight in DBs
- Progress on Q Developer – left & right
- The Q architecture emerges, 3 fold

Event Report - Opentext World 2024 - Opentext is ready for the next actHolger Mueller
Opentext held the North America edition of its user conference Opentext World in Las Vegas from November 18th till 21st 2024 at the Sands Convention Center. Well attended, lots of progress the portfolio is coming together. Very impressive R&D investment with 10k of 22k employees being in Product. What was / is your take on Opentext?
I had the opportunity to attend the Infor Velocity Summit, held in Las Vegas from September 30th to October 2nd, at the brand new Fountainbleau resort. Well attended with over 800 attendees it was the middle scale event that is working well these days. Infor is doubling down on verticals, with a new tool to deliver outcomes - business maps. The new Process Mining will help Infor customers to figure out 'what is going on' inside of their Infor apps. The question is - can Infor build all the needed automation that customers need, its strong EAP with Infor OS gives great options here - but bigger ERP competitors have already stated they cannot build it al.
Holger Mueller attended Workday's user conference Rising, held in Las Vegas from September 16th-19th 2024, very well attended with over 30k attendees. The event was well organized, customers were happy.
Workday showed good traction across its portfolio. It announced its AI offering with Illuminate. But it clearly needs more work, as offerings are build on the architecture shared in Spring this year, then there is the partnership with Salesforce (CEO Marc Benioff was remotely available for a chat with CEO Carl Eschenbach), and then Illuminate. Workday wikll have to do some message clarification cleanup. Much brighter is the pictture for the Workday EAP platform, Workday Extend - that sees massive adoption. Workday also (implicitly) admitted that it cannot built it alone, Extend is critical to get customers and partners on board. Partners are also key the expedited implementatiokn of Workday via Industry Accelerators. Workday is doubling down on payroll, with a new Payroll Connect interface - and renewed partner efforts to tackle global payroll needs. The Workday UX will see its most significatn renivation with a move to conversational UX, a key move that will help with existing UX challenges.
Overall a good Workday Rising, with customers and partners feeling energized on the direction of Workday. Now the momentum has to materiazlize in go-lives, happy customers, happy employees and happy partners.

How Valletta helped healthcare SaaS to transform QA and compliance to grow wi...Egor Kaleynik
This case study explores how we partnered with a mid-sized U.S. healthcare SaaS provider to help them scale from a successful pilot phase to supporting over 10,000 users—while meeting strict HIPAA compliance requirements.
Faced with slow, manual testing cycles, frequent regression bugs, and looming audit risks, their growth was at risk. Their existing QA processes couldn’t keep up with the complexity of real-time biometric data handling, and earlier automation attempts had failed due to unreliable tools and fragmented workflows.
We stepped in to deliver a full QA and DevOps transformation. Our team replaced their fragile legacy tests with Testim’s self-healing automation, integrated Postman and OWASP ZAP into Jenkins pipelines for continuous API and security validation, and leveraged AWS Device Farm for real-device, region-specific compliance testing. Custom deployment scripts gave them control over rollouts without relying on heavy CI/CD infrastructure.
The result? Test cycle times were reduced from 3 days to just 8 hours, regression bugs dropped by 40%, and they passed their first HIPAA audit without issue—unlocking faster contract signings and enabling them to expand confidently. More than just a technical upgrade, this project embedded compliance into every phase of development, proving that SaaS providers in regulated industries can scale fast and stay secure.

Who Watches the Watchmen (SciFiDevCon 2025)Allon Mureinik
Tests, especially unit tests, are the developers’ superheroes. They allow us to mess around with our code and keep us safe.
We often trust them with the safety of our codebase, but how do we know that we should? How do we know that this trust is well-deserved?
Enter mutation testing – by intentionally injecting harmful mutations into our code and seeing if they are caught by the tests, we can evaluate the quality of the safety net they provide. By watching the watchmen, we can make sure our tests really protect us, and we aren’t just green-washing our IDEs to a false sense of security.

What Do Contribution Guidelines Say About Software Testing? (MSR 2025)Andre Hora
Software testing plays a crucial role in the contribution process of open-source projects. For example, contributions introducing new features are expected to include tests, and contributions with tests are more likely to be accepted. Although most real-world projects require contributors to write tests, the specific testing practices communicated to contributors remain unclear. In this paper, we present an empirical study to understand better how software testing is approached in contribution guidelines. We analyze the guidelines of 200 Python and JavaScript open-source software projects. We find that 78% of the projects include some form of test documentation for contributors. Test documentation is located in multiple sources, including CONTRIBUTING files (58%), external documentation (24%), and README files (8%). Furthermore, test documentation commonly explains how to run tests (83.5%), but less often provides guidance on how to write tests (37%). It frequently covers unit tests (71%), but rarely addresses integration (20.5%) and end-to-end tests (15.5%). Other key testing aspects are also less frequently discussed: test coverage (25.5%) and mocking (9.5%). We conclude by discussing implications and future research.
Secure Test Infrastructure: The Backbone of Trustworthy Software DevelopmentShubham Joshi
A secure test infrastructure ensures that the testing process doesn’t become a gateway for vulnerabilities. By protecting test environments, data, and access points, organizations can confidently develop and deploy software without compromising user privacy or system integrity.
