Kellyn Pot’Vin is a senior technical consultant and Oracle ACE Director who has authored books and leads various database technology groups. Oracle Multitenant was released in 2013 and allows databases called pluggable databases (PDBs) to be contained within a single container database (CDB), sharing resources. PDBs can be easily migrated, cloned, and provisioned. Monitoring and administration of CDBs and PDBs uses new database views with the CON_ID identifier to distinguish containers and pluggables.
The document outlines Oracle's Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) approach for transitioning Oracle E-Business Suite applications to a highly available configuration on Sun platforms. This document provides an overview and configuration details for Oracle Flex Clusters and Flex ASM in Oracle Database 12c. Key points include:
- Flex Clusters introduce a hub-and-spoke topology that can scale to 64 hub nodes and many more leaf nodes to reduce interconnect complexity.
- Flex ASM allows database instances to connect to ASM instances running on a subset of nodes rather than each node, improving high availability.
- Configuring a Flex Cluster requires specifying hub and leaf nodes. Flex ASM is automatically enabled. Existing clusters can be converted to Flex mode.
- The architecture introduces an ASM network for communication between ASM and clients. ASM listeners provide load balancing across instances.
Flex Your Database on 12c's Flex ASM and Flex ClusterMaaz Anjum
This document provides an overview of Flex Clusters and Flex ASM in Oracle Database 12c. It defines Flex Clusters as a scalable and dynamic architecture with hub and leaf nodes. Leaf nodes do not require direct access to shared storage. It describes how to configure a cluster as a Flex Cluster and change node roles. It also introduces Flex ASM, which allows ASM to run on fewer nodes while providing failover of client connections.
Node management in Oracle Clusterware involves monitoring nodes and evicting nodes if necessary to prevent split-brain situations. The CSSD process monitors nodes through network heartbeats over the private interconnect and disk heartbeats using the voting disks. If a node fails to respond within the configured time limits for either heartbeat, it will be evicted from the cluster. Eviction involves sending a "kill request" to the node over the remaining communication channels to forcibly remove it. With Oracle Clusterware 11.2.0.2, reboots of nodes can be avoided by gracefully shutting down the Oracle Clusterware stack instead of an immediate reboot when fencing a node.

Based on the information provided:
- Nodes 1 and 2 detected that the other node was missing heartbeats and initiated eviction processes simultaneously.
- However, node 2's CSSD correctly detected that node 1 was still actively updating the voting disks based on the disk heartbeat information, indicating it was still active.
- To prevent a potential split-brain situation, node 2's CSSD aborted the local node instead of continuing with the eviction process, since node 1 appeared to be the larger and active cohort.
- This demonstrates how Oracle Clusterware is designed to detect and resolve potential split-brain situations during node failure/ejection events to maintain cluster integrity. The CSSD on node 2 made the right decision to

Keynote - first presented in course of the DOAG HA Day in Hamburg in September 2018. This deck discusses the Maximum Availability Architecture approach against the background of "Four More Often Than Not Disregarded HA Fundamentals" and also shares HA thoughts that eventually will lead to “Continuous Availability” rather than (just) “High Availability”.
This presentation addresses and tries to provide a reasonable answer to the rather common question: "Why should we still use an Oracle Database?", which more often than not is raised by management, but in the presence of more and more "alternative solutions", also by non-Oracle database administrators who are looking to solve a particular problem.
This is the first presentation of my "Oracle Fundamentals" presentation series.

Exceptional Behaviors: How Frequently Are They Tested? (AST 2025)Andre Hora
Exceptions allow developers to handle error cases expected to occur infrequently. Ideally, good test suites should test both normal and exceptional behaviors to catch more bugs and avoid regressions. While current research analyzes exceptions that propagate to tests, it does not explore other exceptions that do not reach the tests. In this paper, we provide an empirical study to explore how frequently exceptional behaviors are tested in real-world systems. We consider both exceptions that propagate to tests and the ones that do not reach the tests. For this purpose, we run an instrumented version of test suites, monitor their execution, and collect information about the exceptions raised at runtime. We analyze the test suites of 25 Python systems, covering 5,372 executed methods, 17.9M calls, and 1.4M raised exceptions. We find that 21.4% of the executed methods do raise exceptions at runtime. In methods that raise exceptions, on the median, 1 in 10 calls exercise exceptional behaviors. Close to 80% of the methods that raise exceptions do so infrequently, but about 20% raise exceptions more frequently. Finally, we provide implications for researchers and practitioners. We suggest developing novel tools to support exercising exceptional behaviors and refactoring expensive try/except blocks. We also call attention to the fact that exception-raising behaviors are not necessarily “abnormal” or rare.
This presentation explores code comprehension challenges in scientific programming based on a survey of 57 research scientists. It reveals that 57.9% of scientists have no formal training in writing readable code. Key findings highlight a "documentation paradox" where documentation is both the most common readability practice and the biggest challenge scientists face. The study identifies critical issues with naming conventions and code organization, noting that 100% of scientists agree readable code is essential for reproducible research. The research concludes with four key recommendations: expanding programming education for scientists, conducting targeted research on scientific code quality, developing specialized tools, and establishing clearer documentation guidelines for scientific software.
