Streaming Event Time Partitioning with Apache Flink and Apache Iceberg - Juli...Flink Forward
Netflix’s playback data records every user interaction with video on the service, from trailers on the home page to full-length movies. This is a critical dataset with high volume that is used broadly across Netflix, powering product experiences, AB test metrics, and offline insights. In processing playback data, we depend heavily on event-time partitioning to handle a long tail of late arriving events. In this talk, I’ll provide an overview of our recent implementation of generic event-time partitioning on high volume streams using Apache Flink and Apache Iceberg (Incubating). Built as configurable Flink components that leverage Iceberg as a new output table format, we are now able to write playback data and other large scale datasets directly from a stream into a table partitioned on event time, replacing the common pattern of relying on a post-processing batch job that “puts the data in the right place”. We’ll talk through what it took to apply this to our playback data in practice, as well as challenges we hit along the way and tradeoffs with a streaming approach to event-time partitioning.

Imagine this scenario. You follow an OpenAPI-first approach when designing your services. You have a distributed architecture with multiple services and all of them expose a RESTful API and have their OpenAPI Specification. Now you use Spring Cloud Gateway in front of them so you can route the requests to the appropriate service and apply cross-cutting concerns. But, what happens with the OpenAPI of every service? It would be great if you could generate a unique OpenAPI for the whole system in the Gateway. You could also expose and transform only selected endpoints when defining them as public. And what about the routes? You would like to reconfigure them dynamically and on-the-fly in the Gateway when there is a change in a service, right?
Stop imagining. In this talk, I will show you how we have done that in our product and how we are leveraging the programmatic Spring Cloud Gateway API to reconfigure the routes on the fly. You will also see it in action during the demo!

Kafka has a well-designed replication protocol, but over the years, we have found some extremely subtle edge cases which can, in the worst case, lead to data loss. We fixed the cases we were aware of in version 0.11.0.0, but shortly after that, another edge case popped up and then another. Clearly we needed a better approach to verify the correctness of the protocol. What we found is Leslie Lamport’s specification language TLA+.
In this talk I will discuss how we have stepped up our testing methodology in Apache Kafka to include formal specification and model checking using TLA+. I will cover the following:
1. How Kafka replication works
2. What weaknesses we have found over the years
3. How these problems have been fixed
4. How we have used TLA+ to verify the fixed protocol.

In this talk, we will introduce Loki, its architecture and the design trade-offs in an approachable way. We’ll both cover Loki and Promtail, the agent used to scrape local logs to push to Loki, including the Prometheus-style service discovery used to dynamically discover logs and attach metadata from applications running in a Kubernetes cluster.

When we first began using chef at Parse, we fell in love with it. Chef became our source of truth for everything. Bootstrapping, config files, package management, deploying software, service registration & discovery, db provisioning and backups and restores, cluster management, _everything_. But at some point we reached Peak Chef and realized our usage model was starting to cause more problems than it was solving for us. We still love the pants off of chef, but it is not the right tool for every job in every environment. I'll talk about the evolution of Parse's chef infrastructure, what we've opted to move out of chef, and some of the tradeoffs involved in using chef vs other tools.

We introduce the Gaussian process (GP) modeling module developed within the UQLab software framework. The novel design of the GP-module aims at providing seamless integration of GP modeling into any uncertainty quantification workflow, as well as a standalone surrogate modeling tool. We first briefly present the key mathematical tools on the basis of GP modeling (a.k.a. Kriging), as well as the associated theoretical and computational framework. We then provide an extensive overview of the available features of the software and demonstrate its flexibility and user-friendliness. Finally, we showcase the usage and the performance of the software on several applications borrowed from different fields of engineering. These include a basic surrogate of a well-known analytical benchmark function; a hierarchical Kriging example applied to wind turbine aero-servo-elastic simulations and a more complex geotechnical example that requires a non-stationary, user-defined correlation function. The GP-module, like the rest of the scientific code that is shipped with UQLab, is open source (BSD license).
Analysis of reinforced concrete deep beam is based on simplified approximate method due to the complexity of the exact analysis. The complexity is due to a number of parameters affecting its response. To evaluate some of this parameters, finite element study of the structural behavior of the reinforced self-compacting concrete deep beam was carried out using Abaqus finite element modeling tool. The model was validated against experimental data from the literature. The parametric effects of varied concrete compressive strength, vertical web reinforcement ratio and horizontal web reinforcement ratio on the beam were tested on eight (8) different specimens under four points loads. The results of the validation work showed good agreement with the experimental studies. The parametric study revealed that the concrete compressive strength most significantly influenced the specimens’ response with the average of 41.1% and 49 % increment in the diagonal cracking and ultimate load respectively due to doubling of concrete compressive strength. Although the increase in horizontal web reinforcement ratio from 0.31 % to 0.63 % lead to average of 6.24 % increment on the diagonal cracking load, it does not influence the ultimate strength and the load-deflection response of the beams. Similar variation in vertical web reinforcement ratio leads to an average of 2.4 % and 15 % increment in cracking and ultimate load respectively with no appreciable effect on the load-deflection response.
Passenger car unit (PCU) of a vehicle type depends on vehicular characteristics, stream characteristics, roadway characteristics, environmental factors, climate conditions and control conditions. Keeping in view various factors affecting PCU, a model was developed taking a volume to capacity ratio and percentage share of particular vehicle type as independent parameters. A microscopic traffic simulation model VISSIM has been used in present study for generating traffic flow data which some time very difficult to obtain from field survey. A comparison study was carried out with the purpose of verifying when the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple linear regression (MLR) models are appropriate for prediction of PCUs of different vehicle types. From the results observed that ANFIS model estimates were closer to the corresponding simulated PCU values compared to MLR and ANN models. It is concluded that the ANFIS model showed greater potential in predicting PCUs from v/c ratio and proportional share for all type of vehicles whereas MLR and ANN models did not perform well.
