- 1. Personal Statement The reason I am applying for this course is for my passion for the media industry, particularly social media. I have followed people within the industry whether they are social media content creators or music videos directors, I have admired their work ethic, passion, creative process, and their life they have built through media. With this interest I have been wanting to make my own mark within the media industry, using my knowledge gained from college, personal study, and experiences I am going to make this happen, with the help of university, this is why I am suitable for this course. I have networked with a variety of people that are part of the media industry. I have networked with Frank Styles on my B2 Creative Industry response project; I created a documentary about him and his artwork. I have networked with a lot of people inside college lectures such as BBC with guest Sophie Gibson, Sunderland University with guest Caroline Finnon, Lee Axon from Digifin, Teesside University, Vibe magazine, and Zara Mcdermott BBC documentary maker. All these guest speakers have mentioned their place within the media industry, and it was extremely helpful and inspiring. I have gained work experience with Media Savvy and have edited diverse types of content; I have filmed some footage on one of their cameras and used relevant features of the camera. The type of skills and achievements I have gained within media is starting to learn about the media industry myself. In 2020 I started my own YouTube channel and posted a variety of content. I self-taught myself to edit on different software's, I purchased my own camera to help me gain knowledge of cameras. I then started to focus on short – form content for TikTok and Instagram. Starting my own content creation has given me dedication, patience, and confidence within what I can create. With these self – taught skills I am confident with more experience I can grow my social medias and create my own brand for myself. I am also confident that I can overcome new challenges as I am resilient and ready to learn. The reason I would be a suitable candidate for this course is my background in the media industry. I have self-taught myself editing, filming, and forming ideas. I have a deep passion for media and creating videos whether it is for social media, short or long form content, I am willing to excel in it all. I have gained work experience which has helped me understand media for different businesses and how to run accounts for other people and companies. During my time at University, I want to develop my knowledge of the media industry through lectures, workshops, and personal study. I want to make sure I am fully prepared for the industry when I leave University. I will make sure I use my time wisely and be open to everything the University offers me within my time of study. I want to achieve the highest grades I can achieve to ensure I can have all the opportunities I want when I leave. I will be on time for class, make my work look professionally detailed, hand in any assignments in on time to make sure I fulfill my university studies. I am willing to take on new challenges and experiences to develop my further studies. During school I did not have the option to study a media course, this led me to believe that studying a sports course is what I genuinely wanted to do because I am interested in sports and have played multiple sports throughout my life. I eventually did study Sports level 3 at Sunderland Bede College but
- 2. six weeks in I realized it was not for me. I moved to the media and caught up on the work in October break, and quickly discovered that I made the right decision. I have been interested in media but mostly social media because I have grown up on it and follow a lot of influences and content creators. I am interested in movies but mostly series and I enjoy watching the different genres and seeing from a media perspective the different shots, actions and realizing how they could have made these shots so powerful. This is the reason I want to get into the media industry as being part of the production team would interest me to find out how much work, dedication and equipment is used for just one scene. I would be able to understand how everything is created and then edited together for the final product. I never thought about how I can make my passion and interest in media a full-time career, and which one is right for me. Researching potential media careers, I want to go down helped me realize that university is going to help me. I noticed a lot of different media courses that I could choose and how a lot of them can link in together; this would allow me to go down the different career paths I am interested in. I was in two minds about picking the right media course for me and that would benefit me. Going to the opening evenings helped me as I could talk directly to the lecturers, and they gave me advice on which one would benefit me the most as of now and in the future. I am glad that the media courses are practically assessed and not written. This is helpful as I can use all my practical skills, whether filming and editing, or the ones I already had, throughout my studies at university. I am a more practical based media student as I like to show what I can create with a camera and editing software, rather than writing about how I would do it. This also will help me to excel as I can show how creative I am and how I can make an idea become a reality, and I can show off my practical skills that I have gained through the different modules and eventually my final year. I would always do a write up about my creation during the modules and final product to show my creative, filming and editing process and how I have gathered everything I need to make the final product. After my time in University, I would like to work for myself as a social media manager, content creator or a music video director. I am going to make sure whichever course I pick will allow me to do one or more of these careers by the end of my studies. I am open to learning everything I need in university then expanding my knowledge in an area that was not as covered in university. I also would like to have more than one career in the same area as I am interested in a lot of areas. I would like to build my own career as a content creator or social media manager or work for music artists as a music video director. Being self-employed would help me expand my own knowledge of areas I want to develop. I would also be able to create my own name within the media industry by using my own knowledge I already have and gained from university. I will be able to work my own hours, create any type of content, collaborate with other creators who are doing a similar job to me, this can network. I will also be able to expand my career and experience as I want to work on more than one career path. This will show my passion and dedication as I have gone down different areas that do not normally link together. This will be good for me as I will be my own business and knowing about different areas would make people want to hire me. I would like to be a social media manager and a content creator alongside each other. The way I would link these two careers together is I make myself my own brand, manage my own social medias in a professional way. This means that I can use these skills to grow my own brand. I can also do this
- 3. alongside working for other companies and managing their own social media accounts as well as filming and producing content for them. I can priorities the businesses social media accounts. I am also open to managing social media accounts for content creators who are just starting or wanting new management. As I also would like to become a music video creator or do some work that links in with music videos. This could be posting song snippets onto their social media pages, filming behind the scenes of music videos or helping film the music video in any way. I am incredibly open to working for anyone and do this type of content, this is because Iam passionate about creating media and I would happily help people with their media as I understand how hard it is. I am open to working for different companies with their media promotions. I would like to focus on their social media aspects, but I am willing to create other forms of media for them. Working within a media team would help me expand my knowledge, teamwork, and communication skills. I will be working with a team full of people that are interested in the media and the job role they are acquired for. This will make my passion, inspiration and creative process excel because I am around positive people who share the same interests as me. I would also be working with people who are more experienced than me, this means I will be working with people who have a range of skills and experience that would help me excel. I could be working in different areas of the media Centre depending on where I am based, this means I will be gaining experience in areas I never thought I would. I could also gain more networking opportunities within the media center and outside, this can be beneficial as I will be meeting new people and have new opportunities.
