A Brief History Of Science Physics – Chapter 1B
A Brief History of Science From Genesis to the Greeks Dominion mandate-the commandment to occupy and make use of the earth. The Bible was not written until after the flood-this is the only existing document that contains any scientific information from before the Flood. We know it is accurate because it is God’s own words. Greeks used abstract reasoning. Aristotle considered the material world to be imperfect and constantly changing.
A Brief History of Science Deductive Reasoning Deductive reasoning begins with a series of logical statements and ends with a true conclusion, assuming the supporting statements are true and the form of the argument is valid. Inductive Reasoning Inductive reasoning-begins with a collection of observations from which a general conclusion is obtained. This shows what is most probable or likely to be true, while deduction leads to what must be true. Experiments-ways to test our data to prove our thoughts
A Brief History of Science Renaissance-Changing Views Archbishop James Ussher used astronomical observations and biblical genealogies to calculate Creation occurred in 4004 B.C. New inventions during the renaissance-the telescope, microscope, regulated clock During the renaissance, there were many Christian scientists. Johannes Kepler said that his work was “merely thinking God’s thoughts after him.” Many scientists thought studying nature through science was a good way to glorify God.
A Brief History of Science Evolutionary Challenges Geology came under attack for many reasons. 1779, Compte de Buffon claimed that 75,000 years had passed since creation. 1785, James Hutton proposed that all natural causes were unchanged throughout history, leading to the theory of uniformitarianism.
A Brief History of Science Evolutionary Challenges Uniformitarianism-the concept that all processes have continued in the past as they appear today. This is the basis for evolutionistic theory. It denies miracles in the past because miracles do not appear to be occurring today. 1842, Charles Lyell claimed the earth was at least hundreds of millions of years old. 1859, Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species explained the process of biological evolution.
A Brief History of Science Evolutionary Challenges Many factors contributed to the acceptance of evolution. The rapid introduction of new technology tend to make man believe he was less dependent on God. The rise of secular humanism, replaced God with man as the object of worship. The loss of power and influence of the Christian denominations.
