POP (Post Office Protocol) is an Internet standard protocol used by email clients to retrieve emails from remote mail servers over TCP/IP. POP was first published in 1984 and updated to POP2 in 1985 and POP3 in 1988, which is still the active version. POP works by storing incoming emails on the POP server until the user logs in with their email client and downloads the messages to their local device, after which the messages are deleted from the server. While POP allows users to access their emails from a single device offline, it does not support accessing the same account from multiple devices simultaneously.
