- 2. About me ● My name is Ritesh Menon and I have been in the industry as a software professional since July 2004. ● Out of my 16+ years of experience, I have invested a solid 10 years in hands-on software development. ● I have primarily worked on building the server-side of things (the things that you don’t see) and today I head the UI Engineering Studio (with things that you do see) at ● I have worked with small startups to large-scale organizations which have helped me understand the DNA of growth. ● My spectrum of experience covers varied business domains and technologies thus making me a generalist rather than a specialist. ● Along with heading a technology division, I also head client engagements shepherding the teams to provide technology solutions to the business needs. ● On the academic side, I completed my Masters degree in Computer Science from the University of Pune in 2004.
- 3. Why am I here? Would I would “fit in” the industry or would I be cast out? Which technologies should I learn to land a job? Would I make it to my dream company? Would I be able to secure an excellent salary package?
- 4. Knowing what you want! Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle. “ ”
- 5. Let’s get you industry-ready! We will be focussing on: 1. What you need to study 2. Prepping your resume 3. Cracking job interviews
- 6. What you need to study Must have !! 1. Good programming skills 2. Algorithms and data structures 3. Database fundamentals 4. Analytical & problem solving skills 5. Good attitude & the ability to work with people Solid knowledge of fundamentals is the key to Master your knowledge by ... ● Solving problems that test your aptitude via logical & analytical reasoning. ● Looking for real world problems that you could solve with the use of technology. ● Getting involved in open source projects. ● Taking up courses online and religiously completing the projects mentioned in the tutorials.
- 7. Don’t be Rather be Do’s & Don’ts… ● Have mastery over 1-2 programming languages. ● Don’t learn too many frameworks. Frameworks can be learnt later. ● If you want to be a frontend developer, master JavaScript. You may pick up knowledge of one framework, say Angular or React but not both. ● Similarly, if you want to be a backend developer, master Java/ C++/ Go/ Node.js. ● Don’t worry about mastering architecture principles or patterns. It is not expected of you at this stage.
- 8. Prepping your resume “The average initial screening time for a candidate’s resume is just 7.4 seconds!” Factor these in... ● Never brag. It’s a job resume, not a dating profile. ● On the top of the resume, mention your goal/ambition. ● Highlight your academic achievements. For example, gold medalist in college, topper in state board, etc. ● Highlight your achievements in tech events such as hackathons. ● Trivial achievements to be avoided mentioning. For example, “winning a painting competition in 7th grade.” ● Mention the projects you have worked on, your open source contributions, etc. ● Do mention your GitHub and Stack Overflow ids (if you have them). ● Highlight your technical skills - the programming languages and associated frameworks you are confident on. ● Don’t pad it up with too many skills else you will be questioned on all of them.
- 9. Be mindful of your online presence! Don’t post inflammatory messages on social media which can damage your profile! LinkedIn is not Facebook. Follow inspiring people, do not send them random connection requests unless you know them. Network in the industry. Attend tech events. Read tech publications. Meet new people, learn new ideas/trends to be industry ready.

Cracking the job interview “Most interviewers know within the first 90 seconds whether they will hire someone” Some tips to remember... ● First, walk in with confidence, do not fidget, do not mumble greetings. ● Make eye contact. Do not look here and there, do not flip through your papers, do not gaze off into the distance. ● Use your hands wisely. Don’t cross your arms because it looks defensive. Don’t fidget or play with your hair. ● Dress neatly. Don’t flash branded clothes. The key is to be presentable so make sure your clothes are ironed and you look presentable. ● Always carry a copy of your resume. Hand it over properly when asked. ● Be prepared to solve problems on paper - lot’s of them!
- 11. ● Prepare your introduction, talk about your strengths (especially your technical skills). That is going to form the foundation of your interview. ● Don’t brag. Be humble. ● Don’t fake it or lie when you don’t know the answer to questions. ● Walk the interviewers through your thought process. Don’t toil away quietly. The interviewers are interested in your approach, not the final solution. ● Don’t be nervous. Remember the interviewers are also humans like you. ● Attitude is everything and companies want to hire people with great attitude. Remember attitude trumps aptitude. ● Show that you are genuinely interested in the interview and the opportunity. Ask questions. ● Seek feedback. ● Practice, practice and practice a lot for interviews! Cracking the job interview

- 13. Never give up! ● You will encounter rejections, failures and disappointments. ● The key is to not lost faith in yourself. ● Don’t let someone tell you what you can and cannot do. ● Work hard, find good mentors and let your work do the talking. Be prepared for some hard knocks!!
