problem solving skills of a leadership, and techniques
Introduction
The ability to solve problems is a basic life skill and is essential to our day
to day lives , at home, at school, and at work. We solve problems every day without
really thinking about how we solve them. For example: it’s raining and you need to
go to the store. What do you do? There are lots of possible solutions. Take your
umbrella and walk . If you don’t want to get wet , you can drive , or take the bus .
You might decide to call a friend for a ride , or you might decide to go to the store
another day . There is no right way to solve this problem and different people will
solve it differently .
Meaning of problem solving
Problem solving is the act of defining a problem . Determining the
causes of the problem; identifying, prioritizing , and selecting a solution; and
implementing a solution.
The mental process that people go through the discover , analyze and
solve problems.
Definition of problem solving
According to Skinner , Problem solving is a process of overcoming
difficulties that appears to interfere. In a problem solving the entire subject matter is
organized in such a manner that it can be dealt with through the problems identified
during the study.
How well do you solve problems?
■ Define every problem
■ Understanding complexity
■ General problem solving
■ Specific problem solving system
■ Further problems solving strategies
Importance of problem solving
■ Improved decision making
■ Increased efficiency
■ Building confidence
■ Strengthening relationship
■ Innovation
Importance of problem solving
■ Improved decision making:
Problem solving involves analyzing a situation , identifying potential
solutions, and choosing the best course of action. This process can help to improve
decision making skills, allowing you to make more informed choices that are based
on evidence and logic.
■ Increased efficiency:
When faced with a problem the ability to identify the root cause
and come up with a solution can help to save time, money and resources . By being
able to solve problems quickly and effectively.
■ Building confidence:
Successfully solving a problem can be a confidence booster. When
you’re able to tackle a different challenge and find a solution you can build self
confidence and feel more empowered to take on future challenges.
■ Strengthening relationship:
Problem solving often involves collaboration and communication with
others. By working together to find a solution, you can build stronger relationship
with your colleagues and foster a more positive work environment.
■ Innovation:
Problem solving can be a catalyst for innovation. When faced with a
problem, you may need to think outside the box and come up with new ideas to find
a solution.
Steps of process of problem solving
■ Identify the problem
■ Gather information
■ Analyze the problem
■ Generate solution
■ Evaluate solutions
■ Choose the best solution
■ Implement the solution
■ Monitor and Review
■ Reflect and learn
Steps of process of problem solving
■ Identify the problem:
Clearly define the problem. Understanding the issue at hand is crucial . Ask
questions to clarify the problem and its context.
■ Gather information:
Collect relevant data and information . This might include research ,
gathering facts , and seeking expert opinions.
■ Analysis the problem:
Break down the problem into smaller parts . Identify the root causes rather
than just the symptoms . Tools like root cause analysis or the 5 whys can be helpful.
■ Generate solutions:
Brainstorm possible solutions . Encourage creative thinking and list all
potential solutions without evaluating them initially .
■ Evaluate solutions:
Assess the feasibility, pros, and cons of each solution . Consider factors
such as cost, time, resources, and potential impact. This will help you determine the
most effective and suitable solution to the problem.
■ Choose the best solution:
Select the most effective and feasible solution. Sometimes this might
involves combining elements from different solutions . The organizational culture
and goals that you set for evaluating the options.
■ Implement the solution:
Develop an action plan and execute the chosen solution. Ensure that
everyone involved understands their roles and responsibilities. It could also include
planning on what happens next if it something goes wrong with the solution if it
doesn’t work out way you through it would.
■ Monitor and Review:
Track the implementation process and measure the results. Check if
the problem is resolved or if further adjustments are needed.
■ Reflect and learn:
Analyze the outcomes. Reflect on what worked well and what didn’t.
Document lessons learned to improve future problem solving efforts.
By following these steps, you can systematically approach and resolve problems
effectively.
Advantages of problem solving
■ Better thinking
■ Better risk handling
■ Better communication
■ Increases understanding
■ Increased number of solutions
■ Better thinking:
During team problem solving process , a person might think of certain
solutions which can be used to solve such issue for a temporary basis. Team problem
solving techniques helps to conclude with a better solution with better thinking.
■ Better risk handling:
It might seem a bit confusing for people that when it comes to risk , more
people can handle a higher amount of risk . And that is very true because when a
group person tries to handle the severity of the risk, it is quite possible that they can
grow better in their professional outputs .
■ Better communication:
Problems can be solved in a better way with proper communication between
people. And when it comes to a team or a group of persons, then it is easy to
understand that they can communicate better as compared to others.
■ Increases understanding:
As it is explained earlier that team problem solving methods can
increase better communication between people from the same group and
apparently such behavior can lead them to build better understanding between
teammates .
■ Increased number of solutions:
Most of the time while working in an organization whenever some
sort of problem occurs , then the organization heads will consider their
experienced employees to understand the problem and try to get the possible
solutions for such problems.
Disadvantage of problem solving
■ Increased competition
■ Level of confirmation
■ Lack of objective guidelines
■ Unequal participation
■ Lack of team spirit
■ Increased competition:
Most of the time while working in a team a person’s individual efforts
can be ignored because of the team. And that is because that leader and every time
if that team achieves some sort of excellence.
■ Level of confirmation:
When it comes to confirmation of it regarding a certain task or
project , a person needs to understand that it never helps if a person is involved in a
group or is a member of a group.
■ Lack of objective guidelines:
Most of the time it happens in the team working behavior that all the
objectives direction need not be followed because of the team leader direction.
According to the prescribed way, then need to follow a certain type of objective
direction.
■ Unequal participation:
It is not necessary that if a team of a group of a certain number of
people are part of the group, then they need to participate in all types of work or
task . This type of behavior created unequal participation within the group and
which event.
■ Lack of team spirit:
Working in a team or a group takes a lot of team spirit , but some
people totally lack behind in such type of criteria and because of that the team or
a group damages its reputation.
Conclusion
Problem solving is a suitable approach in teaching of
mathematics. It develops the learners the ability to recognize analysis
solve and reflect upon the problematic difficulties.
A true problem solving process will allow students to be
flexible in initiative and creativities . The students should be allowed to
more from on step to another through many alternatives and strategies.
