About 4 years ago a directive came from management to start tracking work time, vacation, overtime, illness and project hours. Without a formal system in place they were resourceful and started saving the data in Excel files. As time progressed the administrative staff realized that more and more time was required to compile useful reports. Every month-end, quarterly and annual report was increasingly difficult with the volume of data accumulating. Does this scenario sound familiar? Sophisticated workgroup computing applications allow you to define different workflows for different types of jobs. So, for example, in an Engineering setting, an ECN might be automatically routed from Engineering to Manufacturing to approve for production. At each stage in the workflow, one individual or group is responsible for a specific task. Once the task is complete, the workflow software ensures that the individuals responsible for the next task are notified and receive the data they need to execute their stage of the process.
