At our CEO Summit in May, Bill Gates described the problem as being twofold. The first is information overload, meaning the sheer amount of data in the workplace is increasing at a staggering rate, and information workers struggle to keep up, while still remaining focused on doing our jobs. And the second problem is information underload, meaning we are flooded with all this information, but we can’t easily find and use the information that is most important and useful.
• #9: In most enterprises, it’s possible to talk about structured and unstructured work, both in terms of the processes that people are engaged in, and in the kind of information they are using. [click] For structured tasks and structured information, organizations have made investments in traditional enterprise systems like CRM, ERP, supply chain management solutions, etc. These are data-driven applications where the worker has to operate within the parameters set by the application environment. These are usually IT-centric in that IT not only manages the platform, but also controls the experience for the business and the workers. [click] Then there’s the area of unstructured work and unstructured content. Organizations have made investments here as well, typically in the desktop and the Office application suite. In these applications, people use powerful, customized tools to fit the way they work, the task they are performing, and the role they are in. [click] Somewhere in the middle are a range of other types of work – collaboration, information management, and process tasks – which would benefit from the consistency and automation of enterprise applications, but also require the flexibility of unstructured applications because their outcomes are less defined than purely structured processes. Organizations have started to invest in IT solutions for this middle-ground of work tasks – in areas like real-time communication, search, web content management, document management and portals, but in many cases, the investments are reactive and uncoordinated, leading to a proliferation of disconnected applications in the data center. • #13: So what’s the solution to the unstructured world problem? [click] In a traditional IT centric view, you would look at the various processes that people need to engage in – collaboration, search, electronic forms, business intelligence and analytics, access to data and applications in portals, and content management – and look for best-of-breed solutions for each of these areas. That solves an IT problem, but it doesn’t solve the people problem. What’s important is the capabilities that they bring to the business: Collaboration: Seamless integration of presence, email / calendaring, web 2.0 technologies, and shared workspaces into information and process capabilities Portal: Easy to configure UI that connects users to information, process, and people in a seamless and natural way. Supports intranet, extranet, and internet scenarios on a single infrastructure Search: Tuned for the enterprise. Quickly find relevant information in a wide range of repositories and formats ECM: An integrated enterprise content management solution to manage the end-to-end lifecycle of unstructured content that can easily extend to every information worker in an organization Business Process and Forms: Automate people business processes and make data collection, distribution, and integration more cost-effective than with paper based forms Business Intelligence: Makes it easy for people to access and analyze up-to-date business data [click] We suggest instead that you optimize your processes around people. You put people and the way they naturally work at the center of the solution, and build outward to create connections to the people, information and process resources they need to do their jobs. [click] In this view, the traditional It investments are integrated into a single environment to simplify both IT management and the user experience. [click] People have access to these resources in the familiar desktop productivity application environment or in a browser, so they can have the rich tools available for unstructured work combined with the anywhere, anytime reach of a portal or workspace. Either way, there’s a single, familiar and consistent way for them to manage all the various information management, collaboration and process-related tasks. [next slide]
• #14: With this solutions, the single IT platform and consistent user experience not only provide out-of-the-box functionality to meet the basic needs of the unstructured world, but also reach out to integrate all the various IT investments already present in the organization. [click] Email, calendar and contact info from the messaging server can be exposed in the unified work environment to enable asynchronous collaboration. Directory and security services from the server platform are integrated to ensure that policies and permissions are transparently enforced, to enable compliance and better governance. Data from multiple databases and repositories is presented in a single set of search results or can be visualized using easy-to-configure dashboards, enabling “BI for the masses” and greater utility of data assets. Presence data and real-time capabilities such as instant messaging and online meetings is integrated through the workspace for contextual real-time collaboration. Transactional business applications and structured processes such as ERP and CRM data can be viewed in customized portals, side by side with collaboration and information access capabilities, to make structured applications easier to learn, easier to support and more useful for people and the organization. And document lifecycle management can be extended from the point of document creation, review, publication, expiration and retention using a single platform making it more natural for people to manage content. [click] In addition to the interoperability and customization capabilities, the technology is also a platform for rapid application development. Professional developers can rapidly build business applications and powerful composite applications to cost-effectively meet emerging challenges as fast as the speed of business. Even power-users and individual workers have easy ways to develop, customize, deploy and manage their own workspaces to fit their specific needs. This puts people in control of the process and allows IT to focus on governance rather than endless customization, change-orders and user-support.

• #16: More than simply creating a problem of IT sprawl, uncoordinated investments to solve the problem of the unstructured world is also making it more difficult for organizations to realize a high return on their people. [click] On one hand, people are expected to navigate through the various interfaces and processes imposed on them by the structured world of traditional IT applications – enterprise apps, multiple locations across the network and PC for documents and information, structured data and forms in both paper and digital format, and various processes such as content and document lifecycle management, enterprise project management, etc. [click] On the other hand, most people’s day-to-day work routine also involves unstructured processes – creating documents, collaborating with colleagues, performing ad hoc tasks and workflows where there is no IT support, and searching for content in various repositories. [click] The result is that the individual worker becomes the point of integration for all these different investments. In other words, people become the middleware. People who were hired for their talent and expertise instead spend their time gathering information, coordinating meetings and facilitating processes. [click] This often results in diminished productivity. And ironically, the more organizations invest in IT solutions to address different facets of this problem, the more complex the information environment for people actually becomes.

Database Metadata Generator for the Business Data Catalog Overview The Business Data Catalog (BDC) enables you to deeply integrate line-of-business systems into Microsoft Office by describing your systems in metadata instead of writing code. This project is a simple program that generates BDC metadata from a SQL Server database table. The Database Metadata Generator requires Office SharePoint Server 2007 Beta 2. How to use Download DatabaseMetadataGenerator.exe Run DatabaseMetadataGenerator.exe on a computer with Office SharePoint Server 2007 installed (run with no arguments to print usage and an example). Test the connection to your database with a business data column or business data web part (See the Office SharePoint Server 2007 SDK for information on how to use these features.) What's generated The database metadata generator creates one system and one entity that corresponds to a table or view. The generated metadata has no authentication mode and so the BDC defaults to PassThrough authentication. If your web server and database are on different computers and you have not enabled Kerberos delegation between them, you will likely want to use a different authentication mode. • #52: We will be providing a set of web parts that will make it easy to build data-driven charts and key visual indicators.  Users can hook up data sources easily through the data source library and like reports, can manage a set of their own custom dashboards, find and sign up for existing ones or have a set of dashboards available to them dependent on their job role.     As with the reports, these dashboards will also be available from their personalized My Sites.

• #57: Not surprisingly, the market for Enterprise Search and Information Management is predicted to grow quite quickly. According to IDC, the market for Information Management software is expected to grow to 12.8 Billion by 2009, with a 9% annual growth rate. And, the fastest growing segment is expected to be Enterprise Search at a annual growth rate of 16%. That’s compared to an overall Software Market which is expected to grow at 6% annually.
