Question 4&5- audience
- 1. Question 4- Who would be the audience for our production?By Eloise Neath
- 2. No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15 rated video. They include some sexual, violent scenes with strong language. The U symbol stands for Universal. It should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. However, a particular child may become upset over a certain scene especially at this lower end of the category range. PG stands for Parental Guidance, meaning it is suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older. Parents should consider if the film is ok for their child to watch. May include mild violence. Films labelled as 12A and 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. Adults planning to take a child under 12 to view a 12A film should consider whether the film is suitable for that child. May contain sexual references and some strong language. Films rated 18 are for adults. No-one under 18 is allowed to see an 18 film at the cinema or buy / rent an 18 rated video. No 18 rated works are suitable for children. Contains frequent strong language, clear sexual scenes, horror blood and gore, violent behaviour.
- 3. 12A/12 I believe our film of Nocturnal would be listed as a 12A/12 to a 15 age rating. It includes scenes that do show some strong language, this gives affect of the film to the audience and we believe makes it look more realistic to the audience. Children that are aged 12+ will enjoy this film as it doesn’t show too much violence, gore and scenes that may scare these individuals too much. In some cases it may be appropriate for the parents to give consent for their child to watch their film as it will be classed as a ‘horror film’ meaning they may want to go with their children to watch it. Some scenes such as when Brad (the main character) is walking outside and becoming the victim of the murder which takes place, there is some strong language yet we felt it was needed as the characters are young and we wanted to make the film as realistic as we could. Films labelled as 12A and 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. There is some strong language, used if necessary but does not over exaggerate the language meaning this age rate is suitable for this this aged audience. The 12A films are believed to be appropriate for a child to go in with a over aged (18+) individual as they need to decide for themselves if the film is ok for that child. The 12 rated film is ok for a child to go in, if they have proof of age meaning they are deciding for themselves if the film is appropriate for them.
- 4. 15 As our film of Nocturnal features some scenes of strong language and horror and murder, we listed it as a 15 and a 12A/12. Our film presents a group of young teenagers (aged 16-17) staying over in a log cabin for the weekend, it features some scenes of the individuals drinking which gives another reason to not rate our production as a PG or U as there are some mature scenes. As the genre of our film is listed as a horror/thriller, we believe individuals of this age range would enjoy our production more than an older individual/adult. The characters are all young meaning the audience of this age range can relate to the film meaning they will appreciate it more meaning more of the public will watch our production. No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15 rated video. 15 rated works are not suitable for children under 15 years of age. Most film with this rating contains strong violence, frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***'), portrayals of sexual activity, strong verbal references to sex, sexual nudity, brief scenes of sexual violence or, verbal references to sexual violence, discriminatory language or behaviour, drug taking. As this type of film includes a wide variety of content within it, individuals must show proof of age before entering the film in case they are younger and become offended by the contents that happens.
- 5. Conclusion to question 4 Overall, I believe our production of Nocturnal is suitable for young individuals rated from 12 years of age (if adult is present) to individuals 15 and above. In my opinion, our film relates to teenagers 15 to 17 as the characters within the film is around the same age meaning the audience can relate to them as they are wanting to be in the same position as them (going on holiday with their friends) creating an easy way for us to attract these individuals in to watch our production. I believe individuals 18 and above are too mature for this production as they have already been through that stage of their life and wont find it that relatable to them in their present life. Also, as horrors/thrillers are becoming a more favoured genre of films, more of the public may want to watch our production even if they are older. We have produced some great shots that give a sense of thrill which we have then edited making them that little bit more creepy.
- 6. Question 5- How did you attract/address your audience?
- 7. Primary research we did before the making of the production? As we wanted to get as much information together from the audience (the public) we decided to make a twitter account and make a poll which asked the public ‘what type of thriller would you prefer?' and ‘who would you prefer to see?' these results would help us get some qualitative data which would improve our thriller meaning we would get a higher amount of individuals watching our production as we have took into consideration the opinions of the public.
- 8. Why is attracting a specific target audience so important? Producing a film with a target audience helps the producers visually understand what they have to include so it will attract a large amount of individuals. We wanted to specifically associate the film to teenagers as we believe they will enjoy the story line more. Our storyline involves a group of young individuals on holiday in a cabin whilst being stalked by a killer . One of the opening scenes shows a party which relates to young people these days. We used alcohol bottles and cans as props to show their trendy ways which is relating to their ages. This shows they are all socialising in the party. We decided to locate the party in a log cabin because we knew they wouldn’t be old enough to go on holiday abroad and believe the log cabin would be a popular idea within the age group.
- 9. Conclusion to question 5 When it comes down to how we attracted our specific audience, I believe we took into consideration a high amount the opinions of our target audience (teenagers). We believe using a social media site to gather some details on what to include within our production was a great idea as teenagers are ‘addicted' to sites like twitter and Facebook meaning they will take an interest in filling in some of the polls we created. Our film relates to teenagers in modern society which has created a big interest in them wanting to watch our film. This is the best outcome that we could of hoped for when it comes down to the distribution of our production.
