READING A
CRITIQUE OF AN
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
LESSON 7
Have you ever had a gadget such as cellular
phone, gaming console, or a computer that
you felt you can’t live without? If so, can you
share some of its special features? What are
your favorite aspects about the said gadget?
 What did you ask actually an oral presentation of a
critique pup an industrial design. Basically, a critique is
an evaluation or judgment of a particular object. It has
to be noted, however, that a critic is not always
negative. Again, one such example is the activity
earlier in which you present and positive treats up your
favorite project and stated why these traits are helpful
or useful to you.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
• An industrial design is the application of principles in
the arts and the sciences to improve the aesthetics and
functionality of a product.
EXAMPLE
Iphone 4: Worth Dying For?
By: Romeo Paolo D. Esquillo
1. The iPhone 4 developed by Apple Inc., was 1st released in the
United States and some parts of Europe on June 24, 2010. At that
time, The said gadget was considered to be the thinnest
smartphone in the world. During that time the price for the said
phone ranges from 27000 to 40000 depending on it’s internal
storage size (8GB, 16GB, 32GB).
Iphone 4: Worth Dying For?
By: Romeo Paolo D. Esquillo
First Paragraph
The title must be
catchy enough to draw
the potential readers
attention
The 1st paragraph contains
general information regarding the
product and facts about it. It is
also important to note that in this
photograph the author it's merely
providing background
information about the product.
EXAMPLE
2. The site the promise that iPhone 4 has on its users, one will need
to think twice before buying it just a few weeks after it’s really
sponsored during that turnover rate of gadgets nowadays. The
iPhone 4, being the 1st of its kind, may simply be a template or
prototype for the other more technologically advanced phones to be
sold in the market in just a few months time. Moreover one has to
also consider the pace at which you said gadget devaluates.
Second Paragraph
The 1st sentence of this
paragraph serves as the
thesis statement of the
critique. The succeeding
statements about iPhone 4
will be anchored on this
paragraph.
EXAMPLE
3. 4 years after it’s 1st release, one can already buy the said gadget
for 15000 to 25000 with the lowest price of an 8GB iPhone 4 and the
highest for a 32GB iPhone 4. While its features remain the same, the
price of the said phone is significantly lower today. It is also
important to know that in it’s span of time the iPhone 4S, 5S, 5C and
6 were all consecutively released.
Third Paragraph
The 3rd paragraph talks
about the price of the
phone this is an important
consideration for most
buyers.
EXAMPLE
4. Retina display (which was a new feature introduced Try the phone), 3.5-inch
capacitive multi-touch LCD screen. SMP camera are just some of the specs of the sald
gadget. One can choose between black and white for the color of the said phone as to
the varied colored choice for the iphone 5C. It is also enclosed an uninsulated steel
frame which also serves as an antenna. Its re camera is 5MP with illuminated sensor
capable of 5x digital room and flash. It also features a high dynamic range which
"blends the bes parts of three separate exposures into a single photo" On the other
hand, its rear camera is 0.3 MP VGA with tap to focus video or still images. Both
cameras are equipped with photo and video tagging While these features may have
been new during its time, they may now be considered obsolete by some gadget
enthusiasts because the newer gadgets coming out all have improved versions of
these.
Fourth Paragraph
The fourth paragraph
discusses the main specs of
the phone. It illustrates how
become relatively “old and
obsolete” just a short whis
after its release.
EXAMPLE
5. The phone is powered by a rechargeable, removable lithium-ion
battery as opposed to the non-removable battery on the latest
iphone model. Charging time is approximately 2-3 hours with the first
charge lasting for about 3-4 hours. Battery life, as with most iphones,
lasts for only about 12 hours, with charging needed every day. This
makes it very inconvenient especially for those attending
engagements that last for days.
Fifth Paragraph
The fifth paragraph talks
about the battery life of
iphone 4.
EXAMPLE
6. With the speed at which new models of these phones are released,
about a new model biannually, one can say that it is not cost-effective
to buy the said phone during its time of release. What may be lacking
the phone during the release time can be a brand-new feature of its
successor. Nonetheless, the iphone 4 still have better features that
most of the smartphones in the market today but is now available at
a much lower price.
Sixth Paragraph
This paragraph serves as the
conclusion; it sums up what
the author said in the body.
The conclusion also gives
the general opinion of the
author about the said
gadget-which, in this case
can be found at the first
sentence of this paragraph.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE CRITIQUE IS
AN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
A critique of an industrial design starts with
the introduction of the product or design to
critiqued. This in turn is followed by
background information about the product.
The body of the critique, on the other
hand, should first introduce the thesis
statement and then provide supporting
details to further substantiate the
general claim of the author. All the other
points in the piece should be anchored
on the thesis statement.
Jargon or specialized language or terms used
in relation to the product at hand. More often
than not, each type of gadget would have its
own set of features, and for this reason, a
writer of a critique of an industrial design
should also be flexible enough to navigate
through a wide repertoire of products.
A critique of an industrial design may or may
not contain a recommendation. The
reviewer’s primary job is to simply evaluate a
product against a set of appropriate criteria.
If the author wants to end his or her piece
emphatically, then he would probably inchide
a recommendation in his critique.
ACTIVITY
1. What is a critique of an industrial design?
2. Describe the characteristics of an effective
critique.
3. In what ways is a critique of an industrial
design helpful?
