Research Suggests Government IT Spending
Will Go Up

Cuts in government budgets have been a recurring theme over the
years since the last election, but new research suggests that its
chief information officers (CIOs) will soon have more money to
spend on IT.
Analyst Gartner carried out an extensive study in the final three months
of 2012 and has now offered a prediction stating that IT budgets will
increase by 1.3 per cent a year in the government and education
sectors until 2017.
Much of this money will go on data centres, IT services and software,
suggesting local authorities are keen to centralise their infrastructure.
Indeed, when asked what their technological priorities were for this
year, legacy modernisation, cloud computing and mobile devices were
among the top answers. It may be, therefore, that the 'bring your own
device' trend and document scanning for online storage are set to
become even more important in the future.
At the same time, internal technology services and devices will
probably see cuts in spending, Gartner suggested, which supports this
trend.
"After years of being told to do more with less, many government CIOs
report that budgets have stabilised or are increasing, placing them in a
better position to deliver and manage IT services more effectively and
efficiently," said Gartner's research director Rick Howard.
It comes after the Office for National Statistics revealed a 0.1 per cent
reduction in inflation during July 2013, something that could have
encouraged positivity over budgets.
Digitising services, especially public-facing ones, is already a priority
for the government as we move into a digital age. The NHS has a
target of going completely paperless by 2018, while the National
Apprenticeship Service was named among the first digital-by-default
departments in December 2012.
Part of the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the
Intellectual Property Office and HMRC will also put more of their
applications online to make life easier for service users while also
boosting security.
