Data Mesh in Practice - How Europe's Leading Online Platform for Fashion Goes...Dr. Arif Wider
A talk presented by Max Schultze from Zalando and Arif Wider from ThoughtWorks at NDC Oslo 2020.
Abstract:
The Data Lake paradigm is often considered the scalable successor of the more curated Data Warehouse approach when it comes to democratization of data. However, many who went out to build a centralized Data Lake came out with a data swamp of unclear responsibilities, a lack of data ownership, and sub-par data availability.
At Zalando - europe’s biggest online fashion retailer - we realised that accessibility and availability at scale can only be guaranteed when moving more responsibilities to those who pick up the data and have the respective domain knowledge - the data owners - while keeping only data governance and metadata information central. Such a decentralized and domain focused approach has recently been coined a Data Mesh.
The Data Mesh paradigm promotes the concept of Data Products which go beyond sharing of files and towards guarantees of quality and acknowledgement of data ownership.
This talk will take you on a journey of how we went from a centralized Data Lake to embrace a distributed Data Mesh architecture and will outline the ongoing efforts to make creation of data products as simple as applying a template.
Cloud offers organizations the opportunity to run their workloads on physical machines at a reduced cost, with better overall performance and enhanced security. Yet engaging in a partial or total migration to cloud requires a solid, holistic strategy that focuses on technical and management challenges that will likely arise, and an organizational mindset that will help ensure the migration’s success. This introductory, vendor agnostic talk will highlight the technical, management and cultural considerations that every cloud migration strategy should consider, how to address some common challenges, and best practices to help guide the process.

Explaining GitHub Actions Failures with Large Language Models Challenges, In...ssuserb14185
GitHub Actions (GA) has become the de facto tool that developers use to automate software workflows, seamlessly building, testing, and deploying code. Yet when GA fails, it disrupts development, causing delays and driving up costs. Diagnosing failures becomes especially challenging because error logs are often long, complex and unstructured. Given these difficulties, this study explores the potential of large language models (LLMs) to generate correct, clear, concise, and actionable contextual descriptions (or summaries) for GA failures, focusing on developers’ perceptions of their feasibility and usefulness. Our results show that over 80% of developers rated LLM explanations positively in terms of correctness for simpler/small logs. Overall, our findings suggest that LLMs can feasibly assist developers in understanding common GA errors, thus, potentially reducing manual analysis. However, we also found that improved reasoning abilities are needed to support more complex CI/CD scenarios. For instance, less experienced developers tend to be more positive on the described context, while seasoned developers prefer concise summaries. Overall, our work offers key insights for researchers enhancing LLM reasoning, particularly in adapting explanations to user expertise.

Scaling GraphRAG: Efficient Knowledge Retrieval for Enterprise AIdanshalev
If we were building a GenAI stack today, we'd start with one question: Can your retrieval system handle multi-hop logic?
Trick question, b/c most can’t. They treat retrieval as nearest-neighbor search.
Today, we discussed scaling #GraphRAG at AWS DevOps Day, and the takeaway is clear: VectorRAG is naive, lacks domain awareness, and can’t handle full dataset retrieval.
GraphRAG builds a knowledge graph from source documents, allowing for a deeper understanding of the data + higher accuracy.

Who Watches the Watchmen (SciFiDevCon 2025)Allon Mureinik
Tests, especially unit tests, are the developers’ superheroes. They allow us to mess around with our code and keep us safe.
We often trust them with the safety of our codebase, but how do we know that we should? How do we know that this trust is well-deserved?
Enter mutation testing – by intentionally injecting harmful mutations into our code and seeing if they are caught by the tests, we can evaluate the quality of the safety net they provide. By watching the watchmen, we can make sure our tests really protect us, and we aren’t just green-washing our IDEs to a false sense of security.

What Do Contribution Guidelines Say About Software Testing? (MSR 2025)Andre Hora
Software testing plays a crucial role in the contribution process of open-source projects. For example, contributions introducing new features are expected to include tests, and contributions with tests are more likely to be accepted. Although most real-world projects require contributors to write tests, the specific testing practices communicated to contributors remain unclear. In this paper, we present an empirical study to understand better how software testing is approached in contribution guidelines. We analyze the guidelines of 200 Python and JavaScript open-source software projects. We find that 78% of the projects include some form of test documentation for contributors. Test documentation is located in multiple sources, including CONTRIBUTING files (58%), external documentation (24%), and README files (8%). Furthermore, test documentation commonly explains how to run tests (83.5%), but less often provides guidance on how to write tests (37%). It frequently covers unit tests (71%), but rarely addresses integration (20.5%) and end-to-end tests (15.5%). Other key testing aspects are also less frequently discussed: test coverage (25.5%) and mocking (9.5%). We conclude by discussing implications and future research.

#3: As someone who works in an enterprise, you’re well aware that managing information isn’t getting any easier. You’ve got to keep your employees connected from anywhere, your customers satisfied, your information secure, and your business continuously innovating.
It’s a lot to manage, but luckily there are tools available to make your information-centric processes run smarter and smoother.
So, with that in mind, today we’re going to dive into some of the many ways OpenText can help.
1. First, we’ll review some of the top challenges that today’s organizations face in managing their information – a task that only continues to grow in scale and complexity.
2. Second, we’ll look at how software as a service (SaaS) applications in the cloud can help enterprises simplify their biggest information management pain points.
3. And third, we’ll explore how OpenText Core SaaS applications and services make it really quick and easy to streamline and regain control of your information-centric processes – for everyone in the enterprise.
Finally, we’ll dive into [insert specific Core application].
#4: More and more evidence is pointing to information management as one of the key deciding factors in innovation. If you can’t secure your content, enable your people to share and collaborate from anywhere, and focus your talent on core business competencies (rather than IT administration) – then you’re going to have a hard time innovating new solutions.
Unfortunately, many enterprises are facing big challenges in managing their content. Some of these stumbling blocks may sound familiar to you…
Teams are working remotely and more distributed than ever. They need to be able to collaborate and share information from anywhere.
Various lines of business or departments across the enterprise have diverse content needs, including their own specific use cases and challenges that can only be addressed with tailored, purpose-built applications.
You’re dealing with information sprawl as a result of different business groups across the organization adopting multiple, sometimes makeshift, unconnected (and unapproved) solutions.
And, finally, meeting information management regulatory requirements and complying with complex, ever-evolving standards is a constant challenge.
For all these reasons and more, organizations are under pressure to accelerate digital transformation.
#5: These challenges were in place before the pandemic of course, but COVID-19 has accelerated the pace of change. Some industry experts have said that two years’ worth of digital transformation happened in two months.
To simplify content-centric business processes, organizations are turning to the cloud in increasing numbers. That’s why, for example, a recent study by 451 Research found that 60.3 percent of organizations identified SaaS as cloud-based technology they will use more of as a result of the pandemic.
And while this trend points to the power of the cloud to enhance innovation, agility and resilience, every organization is unique – meaning digital transformation looks a little different depending on your business.
#6: If you’re looking to address information challenges by doing more in the cloud, your priorities will be guided by where you stand today. Let’s look at some common scenarios and goals:
Scenario #1: “All our systems are on-prem.” 64% of organizations with content exclusively on-prem said their content management puts them at a disadvantage. They know they need to go to the cloud but aren’t sure where to start.
Scenario #2: Now, this is a common situation for a lot of organizations. “We have a mix of on-prem and cloud solutions.” For these enterprises, unconnected solutions are creating information siloes that are getting in the way of productivity, efficiency and innovation.
Scenario #3: For enterprises just getting started, the sky is the limit. They’re saying, “We’re starting from scratch and want to be cloud-native.” They know that starting in the cloud will optimize costs, security, reliability and resilience, but they need to know the right way forward, with quick time-to-value.
And, finally, scenario #4: “We need a custom solution.” Many enterprises have very specific needs and use cases, and they need to develop tailored applications to support existing systems and processes.
[Note: Presenter will likely want to tailor the delivery of this info based on the prospect’s existing environment.]
#7: No matter where you stand today in your digital transformation journey – whether your existing content is on-prem or uses a hybrid model – software as a service (SaaS) solutions can expedite your shift to the cloud and give you control over your information.
This transformation allows you to unlock some game-changing possibilities. You can:
Simplify complex content challenges by making sure information is readily available when and where it’s needed
Work more efficiently, particularly in a remote-work world in which your people need to share and collaborate on content from anywhere
Collaborate easily and securely with heightened protection and compliance for your data
Maximize the value of your IM investments by making your applications work in a smarter, more connected way
Deliver a better customer experience characterized by ease and efficiency
Innovate faster by eliminating the burden of slow systems and processes that drain time and money
#8: OpenText Core applications and services are the fastest, easiest way to achieve all the benefits of SaaS applications in the cloud.
You can enhance collaboration, streamline business processes, increase automation, and simplify compliance – all by tapping into the functionality of applications and services from a central platform.
Teams across the enterprise can easily leverage ready-made, out-of-the-box SaaS applications to solve their content-centric challenges. And developers can quickly create custom solutions and extend existing ones, whether they’re on-prem or in the cloud.
Ultimately, this allows you to accelerate your cloud journey in a coherent, unified way that makes sense for your business.
#9: You have diverse content-centric challenges across your organization – whether you need a better way to manage digital employee records or you want to ensure remote workers can securely access content to do their jobs.
And different groups have different needs and priorities when it comes to managing information. OpenText Core applications and services are built to address IM challenges from every perspective.
Business users can access a diverse suite of purpose-built OpenText Core SaaS applications that promote operational efficiency and solve their information management pain points.
IT teams can stop information sprawl, leverage the scalability and security of an enterprise-grade platform, and maximize their organization’s return on technology investments.
And developers can use APIs to create new, highly customized applications or solution extensions to satisfy special requirements with fast time to market.
Let’s dig a bit deeper into how Core SaaS apps and services make life easier, no matter where you stand in the organization.
#10: Every business unit in your organization relies on information to complete business-critical processes and tasks – from HR to legal to marketing and beyond.
For teams across the enterprise, OpenText Core apps and services are the quickest and easiest way to solve content-centric challenges. And, according to Forrester, 76% of companies surveyed believe that better content management and collaboration would significantly contribute to the acceleration of their digital businesses.
Here’s how Core apps and services support your success:
They get to work fast. You can put out-of-the-box solutions to work right away without needing to wait on IT or developers to create solutions for you.
Solutions are purpose-built to solve common challenges. You can leverage ready-made apps that have been specifically created to streamline your workflows.
For use cases that aren’t reflected in out-of-the box applications, solutions are customizable with Core services. You can work with your technical experts to easily adapt solutions to your specific requirements.
And finally, Core apps and services are highly accessible. You can deploy solutions easily without deep technical knowledge.
Most importantly, there’s no need to wait to solve challenges that are holding back your productivity and innovation. You can remedy them right now.
#11: For IT, the burden of information management can be heavy – especially across a large enterprise. You may be dealing with multiple, unconnected applications, teams sourcing their own solutions that don’t meet compliance, and siloed information that slows down processes and requires lots of administration.
Considering those challenges, it’s no wonder 45% of IT spending will have shifted to the cloud by 2024, according to Gartner.
With OpenText Core apps and services, you can make the cloud work for you, wherever you are in your journey. Here’s why:
Core apps and services enhance your agility. You can improve current on-prem or cloud solutions simply and securely, and address pressing challenges faster to keep employees and customers happy.
You can streamline more of your processes and content, prevent information sprawl, and support better collaboration through a single, secure platform. Not only that, but Core apps and services help you simplify and enhance technology investments and make technology decisions faster.
And finally, you can always keep your content secure and compliant. SaaS applications and services minimize risk, help you stay on top of IM regulations, and enable secure communication and collaboration from anywhere.
#12: Finally, for developers working in an information-rich business environment, the challenge of helping business functions work smarter and faster is constant.
OpenText Core services help developers respond to enterprise needs faster – helping employees and customers have better experiences – by creating custom applications and extending existing ones.
Developers like working with Core services in the cloud for lots of reasons – but one of the biggest is agility. Core services decrease time to market, and therefore time to value, by allowing coders to develop and deploy tailored business applications that satisfy user requirements faster. As you can see in the top right of the slide, in a 2020 Forrester Survey, 26% of respondents said they chose SaaS because of its speed of implementation and deployment.
Devs also appreciate that the platform is robust, giving them access to a comprehensive set of OpenText Core services to unlock the value of enterprise information.
And, last but not least, developers – and their enterprises overall – appreciate that Core services deliver an industry-leading approach to managing information in the cloud, ensuring they can easily meet current cloud standards in usability, accessibility and security (and, in fact, according to Forrester, 70% of cloud adopters have improved security).
#13: Information management isn’t getting any easier – and to combat the growing complexity, enterprises need to invest in the best SaaS solutions to keep them competitive.
OpenText Core applications and services deliver on that need – providing a smarter, faster way to achieve streamlined information management in the cloud, all through a single platform.
So, to wrap up this part of our discussion, let’s do a quick recap of the benefits. Core apps and services empower you to:
Simplify content and keep your processes streamlined and agile
Maximize value, including making the most of your existing investments
Collaborate securely, anytime, anywhere
Satisfy customers with easy, efficient experiences
And innovate faster, so you can grow your business and always stay competitive
#14: Thanks for listening. I look forward to answering your questions and moving the conversation forward.
