Platforms such as Kubernetes address a lot of the complexity; they handle resource isolation and utilization, networking, and deployments nicely. But a lot of the involved complexity such as load balancing, rollout scenarios, circuit breaking, retries, rate limiting, observability, tracing and transport security is still left up to the development teams. Of course, you can address all of these challenges in your microservices programmatically using popular open-source components such as Hystrix, Ribbon, Eureka, the EFK Stack, Prometheus or Jaeger. But, unfortunately, this approach can quickly lead to excessive library bloat and suddenly your microservices are not quite so micro anymore. All this might seem acceptable if you’re on a single, consistent development stack like Java EE or Spring Boot. But tackling these complexities becomes even more challenging if you’re dealing with multiple stacks and multiple frameworks, to say nothing about dealing with legacy applications that you can’t modify to retrofit these requirements. In comes Istio to the rescue. It is a so-called service mesh that addresses many of the cross-cutting communication concerns in a microservice architecture. Think of Istio as AOP (aspect-oriented programming) for microservice communication. Instead of implementing everything directly within your services, Istio transparently injects and decorates the desired concerns into the individual communication channels. Mario-Leander Reimer offers an overview of Istio and explains how it addresses the inherent complexities in microservice architectures. He briefly discusses the conceptual architecture and the main building blocks of Istio before diving into several examples deployed on a live Kubernetes cluster to demonstrate the different traffic management features, as well as diagnosability and security.

Envoy is a proxy developed by Lyft to be used as an edge proxy, TCP proxy for services like MongoDB, and as a sidecar proxy. Lyft deployed Envoy incrementally, starting with the edge proxy to provide benefits like stats and load balancing. They then added Envoy as a TCP proxy for MongoDB and later as a sidecar. This allowed adding features like rate limiting and observability. Lyft now manages Envoy configuration using templates rendered by Jinja and deployed via a combination of static and dynamic configs. Control plane APIs allow dynamic configuration of things like clusters, routes and listeners.

Building and scaling a multi-cloud solution that's enabled for cloud bursting is not a trivial task, and requires a lot of automation. While experiencing hyper-growth on the Adobe Advertising Cloud, our operations engineering team had to frequently update and improve its workflow in order to stay nimble and allow fast delivery of new infrastructure. At TubeMogul/Adobe Advertising Cloud, we implemented a lean Puppet workflow that enables the operations engineering team to deploy and support a broad range of services in a complex environment that supports hundreds of billions of requests a day. With over 150 changes released per day on its production infrastructure, the team had to adjust and tune its processes to enforce quality, standards, to review, and to prevent systems from breaking. All this ends up overshadowing the actual logic of the service itself and results in a lot of dependencies and code. Because of this, we at Soluto created a template for the boilerplate, which worked great... Until we had to upgrade one of the dependencies which resulted in huge effort of code upgrades and deployment across each and every service that uses the template. And that’s besides the fact we needed to make a separate template for each language we used (and over the years, the number of programming languages we use at production increased dramatically). We needed a way to simplify all this. We wanted to get rid of the boilerplate while maintaining the functions listed above. So we decided to delegate the entire responsibility to the Kubernetes infrastructure. In this lecture, I will do a live coding session and show you how to remove the boilerplate from your code and move it to the infrastructure, and discuss the benefits and limitations of this approach.
