Gandhi led a non-violent protest called Salt Satyagraha against the British salt monopoly in India. He marched to the coast to collect salt in defiance of the law and was arrested. His followers continued producing and selling illegal salt, facing brutal response from the government. At Dharasana salt works, non-violent protesters were violently attacked by British police. This led to the Gandhi-Irwin pact allowing villagers to produce limited salt and ended the civil disobedience movement while keeping the Salt Acts intact.
